Danbury Parks and Recreation is seeking a dedicated and energetic Assistant Director to support the Site Director in managing our youth summer camps. The Assistant Director will play a key role in ensuring smooth daily operations, assisting with staff supervision, and enhancing the camper experience for children age 6-12. This position requires a team-oriented individual with strong organizational skills and a genuine enthusiasm for working with youth in a recreational setting.
Key ResponsibilitiesProgram Support: Assist the Site Director in planning and implementing camp activities, ensuring they are engaging, safe, and age-appropriate.
Staff Assistance: Support the training and supervision of camp counselors and staff, stepping in to lead activities or manage groups as needed.
Camper Engagement: Interact directly with campers, fostering a positive and inclusive environment, and addressing minor behavioral or parental concerns under the Site Director’s guidance.
Logistics Coordination: Help manage daily schedules, activity transitions, and supply inventories, ensuring all resources are prepared and available.
Safety Monitoring: Enforce camp safety rules and procedures, assisting with emergency response protocols when directed by the Site Director.
Administrative Duties: Handle basic paperwork, such as attendance logs, incident reports, or parent communications, as assigned.
Substitute Role: Step in for the Site Director during absences or breaks, maintaining continuity of leadership and operations.
Education & Experience: High school diploma required; some college coursework in recreation, education, or a related field preferred. At least 1-2 years of experience working with children in a camp, school, or recreational setting.
Skills: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with staff and connect with campers and parents.
Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain prior to start date). Experience with water safety or group activities is a plus.
Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, lift up to 25 lbs., and participate actively in camp programs.
Background Check and Drug Screen: Must pass a drug screen, criminal background check and provide references.
Enthusiasm for youth recreation and outdoor activities.
Dependability and flexibility in a dynamic camp environment.
Ability to take initiative while following leadership direction.
Patience and a positive attitude when working with diverse groups of children.
