What are the responsibilities and job description for the Davenport Parks and Recreation - Community Events Program Specialist position at City of Davenport AmeriCorps?
*This is a temporary AmeriCorps position through the City of Davenport AmeriCorps Program*
Position Information:
Living Stipend: $3,700
Education Award: $1,565.08
Service Term Dates: May 27, 2025 - August 16, 2025
Position Specifics:
1) Attend at least 80% of City of Davenport free community events to increase community outreach
· Attend events with site supervisor and/or other DPR staff by running the DPR community outreach table, answering questions about DPR and AmeriCorps, and discussing upcoming department hosted free community events
· Help with set up and tear down of event, tables, activities, etc.
· Events and dates include, but are not limited to:
o Pawp-Up Pup Parks (Tuesdays & Thursdays; 3:00pm-5:00pm)
o Picnic in the Park (June 6, June 20, July 11, August 1; 11:00am-1:00pm)
o Party in the Park (June 12, June 26, July 17, August 7; 5:30pm-7:30pm)
o Kick-Off 2 Summer (June 14; 12:00pm-3:00pm)
o YouthFest (June 25; 8:30am-12:30pm)
o Red, White, and Boom (July 3; 5:30pm-10:00pm)
o Kids to Parks Day (July 12; 12:00pm-3:00pm)
o Back 2 School Bash (August 9; 12:00pm-3:00pm)
2) Create hands-on activities and games for implementation at free community events by researching on teaching websites, in books, etc.
· Develop 1 large group game for each age range (elementary, middle school, high school, adults, all-ages)
o Label and organize the games by age group, activity type, and group size
o Develop instructions on how to lead each game, supplies needed, and space requirements
o Submit 1 game to site supervisor by each deadline: June 18, July 2, July 16, July 30, and August 6
o Implement approved games during following weeks of service, as scheduled by site supervisor
· Develop 1 small group game for each age range (elementary, middle school, high school, adults, all-ages)
o Label and organize the games by age group, activity type, and group size
o Develop instructions on how to lead each game, supplies needed, and space requirements
o Submit 1 game to site supervisor by each deadline: June 11, June 25, July 9, July 23, and August 11
o Implement approved games during following weeks of service, as scheduled by site supervisor
· Develop 2 station/obstacle course activities for each age range (elementary, middle school, high school, adults, all-ages)
o Label and organize activities by age group, activity type, and group size
o Develop instructions on how to lead each activity, supplies needed, and space requirements
o Submit 2 activities to site supervisor by each deadline: June 11, June 25, July 9, July 23, and August 11
o Implement approved activities during following weeks of service, as scheduled by site supervisor
· Develop 4 arts and craft activities for each age range (elementary, middle, high school, adults, all-ages)
o Label and organize activities by age group, activity type, and group size
o Develop instructions on how to lead each activity, supplies needed, and space requirements
o Submit 4 activities to site supervisor by each deadline: June 18, July 2, July 16, July 30, and August 6
o Implement approved activities during following weeks of service, as scheduled by site supervisor
3) Create and implement seasonal worksheet books by researching on teaching websites, in books, etc.
· Develop 1 summer-themed workbook for each grade level group (K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8)
o Label and organize the worksheet by grade level group and activity type
o Develop instructions on how to complete each activity and any supplies needed
o Submit 1 completed workbook to site supervisor by each deadline: June 11, June 25, July 9, and July 23
o Implement approved workbooks during following weeks of service, as scheduled by site supervisor
· Develop 1 summer-themed activity one-sheet for each grade level group (K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8)
o Label and organize the one-sheet by grade level group and activity type
o Develop instructions on how to complete the one-sheet and any supplies needed
o Submit 1 completed activity one-sheet to site supervisor by each deadline: June 4, June 18, July 16, and July 30
o Implement approved one-sheets during following weeks of service, as scheduled by site supervisor
4) Create outreach materials by identifying trends in preteen and teen community activities by researching on teaching websites and in books
· Develop 3 outreach materials (i.e., handouts, one-sheet flyers) for teen advisory board
o Submit 1 completed outreach material to site supervisor by each deadline:
· Develop 3 activities for each age group (preteen, teen)
o Label and organize activities by age group, activity type, and group size
o Develop instructions on how to lead each activity, supplies needed, and space requirements
o Submit 1 completed activity to site supervisor by each deadline: June 11, June 25, and July 9
o Implement approved activities during following weeks of service, as scheduled by site supervisor
· Develop 2 community events, including at least 5 activities and games per event, for each age group (preteen, teen) based on examples provided by site supervisor
o Label and organize activities by age group, activity and game types, and group size
o Develop instructions on how to lead each activity and game, supplies needed, and space requirements
o Submit 1 completed event to site supervisor by each deadline: June 18 and July 16
o Implement approved events during following weeks of service, as scheduled by site supervisor
Desired Skills/Qualifications:
· Background in the field of education, recreation, human services, communications, or related field
· Experience working with children and families preferred
Eligibility Criteria:
· Certify that they have or will obtain a diploma/GED before the service contract start date
· Be 18 years old at the start of service
· Pass a national service criminal history check prior to first day of service
· Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: US citizen, US national, or Lawful Permanent Resident
