Location Davenport, FL - Public Works (Weekends as needed)
Job Status Non-Exempt; Full-Time; Permanent

Position Function/Nature of Work:

This is routine unskilled, light and heavy manual labor work maintaining roads, streets, rights-of-way, sidewalks, roadside ditches, culverts, stormwater drains, stormwater ditches, stormwater ponds, street lights, landscaping (trees, bushes, grass, weeds, etc.), and the City cemetery. Work is performed under direction of the Streets Superintendent. Employees in this class are responsible for the satisfactory performance of construction and maintenance activities involving manual labor. Operates one or more of the following equipment with the mechanical attachments which require the manipulation of controls on the vehicles and sometimes on the attachment itself:


  • Various types of tractors
  • Tractor Mounted Boom Attachments
  • Front End Loader
  • Flat Bed Dump Truck
  • Chipper Equipment
  • Tree trimming equipment
  • Mulcher
  • Other types of equipment as required

Essential Duties: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   • Performs a variety of manual labor tasks not requiring specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Cleans and sanitizes park buildings and restrooms.
  • Cuts grass, pulls weeds, rakes, edges sidewalks, trims hedges.
  • Digs holes and trenches, plants trees and plants.
  • Loads and unloads materials, removes litter, cleans vehicles and equipment.
  • Operates pick-up trucks, chain saws, lawn mowers, weed eaters, pressure washers and other small equipment.
  • May operate small gasoline or other powered machinery such as concrete mixers, air hammers, compressors, pumping equipment, and saws.
  • Operates heavier equipment on a temporary, emergency or trainee basis.
  • Washes and cleans and provides routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs manual laboring tasks as assigned.
  • May act as lead worker when assigned.
  • Perform other non-essential duties as required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of assigned equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic and other regulations governing the use of equipment.
  • Ability to see, hear at a normal level, ambulate independently, drive from work site to work site, bend, stoop, sit and stand.
  • Must be able to lift and carry materials that are a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination including the use of multi-hand and/or foot controls.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protection Equipment that may be required by supervision.
  • Ability to learn the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable in the operation of equipment.
  • Ability to make routine maintenance checks and emergency repairs to equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work in all weather and environmental conditions (i.e.: sun, rain, cold, swamp, ditches, dirt and hot asphalt).
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions, read and understand written work orders and instructions and write simple reports.
  • May be required to change primary reporting site for short or long term assignments.
  • Must be capable of working various schedules for short or long term assignments.
  • Ability to use basic computer software, as well as, learn and use various other computer programs as required.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • No experience needed.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be willing to learn and demonstrate a positive attitude.

Special Requirement:

Must be willing to work overtime and on-call duty, as determined by the City Manager or the Department Director.

Other requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida drivers' license.
  • Must possess an honorable military discharge, if applicant has been service connected.
  • Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen.
  • Must pass a physical examination and drug urinalysis test.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must be able to work weekends and nights (as needed).
  • Must be fluent in the English language; ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.

This position may be required to report for work when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.
