General Description
This position is unskilled manual labor. The employee performs manual laboring tasks in a wide variety of maintenance and construction work. This is a labor-intensive position requiring the employee to be in excellent physical condition. Assignments may require some skills that can be easily learned with on-the-job training. Employee must be able to understand written and verbal instructions. Employee may be required to cross train in other job descriptions. Work is performed under the immediate supervision and direction of the Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
1. Cleans and maintains all equipment and tools for which he has been assigned responsibility.
2. Loads, unloads and moves equipment, supplies, materials and tools.
3. Digs trenches, ditches and foundations, and prepares area for planting and backfilling.
4. Clears obstruction from culverts, gutters, ditches, swales and storm drains.
5. Assists other maintenance workers in installing sprinkler systems, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, swales, storm drains, catch basins, rights of way, and all city owned and maintained property.
6. Trims, prunes, waters, and fertilizes grasses, plantings, and trees.
7. Mows landscaped areas, rights of way and other city maintained properties.
8. Assists in the construction and maintenance of all city parks, playgrounds, equipment, and appurtenant facilities.
9. Assists in the preparation for special events associated with the city such as displays and decorations related to the specific function.
10. Performs other duties as necessary and directed.
Education and/or Experience:
Essential:
1. Ability to read, write and understand oral and written instruction.
2. Possess a valid Florida Driver's License free of financial responsibility requirements or restrictions.
Related Knowledge and Abilities
Some knowledge of the tools used in maintenance and construction of city facilities; sufficient physical strength, conditioning, and agility to do light to heavy manual labor; and freedom of movement to permit the lifting and carrying of 100# loads periodically during a normal work day. This employee must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding, steps, stairs, ramps and any other means provided to perform the duties listed under examples of duties performed. This employee must have the ability to read and write; able to take direction from supervisory personnel; and maintain a good working relationship with other employees. The employee must be available for overtime work and emergency call-ins when directed. This employee must be able to be contacted by telephone and shall carry a beeper if required by individual job assignment.
