What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Lifeguard (SL) - Outdoor position at City of Dearborn?
RATE OF PAY: $15.75 - $17.00 per hour
MINIMUM AGE: 17 years
THOSE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY:
This position is available to all Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors who have satisfactorily completed at least two seasons at an Outdoor pool facility or at least six months at an indoor pool facility.
HOURS AND PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT: Seasonal position – Starting in late May and ending in September. Employee may work 5-6 days per week (up to 40-50 hours per week) Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be able to work flexible hours. Other than scheduled days off, requests are only granted if a qualified worker can substitute for the employee. It is the employee’s responsibility to secure a substitute. Do not plan on taking an extended vacation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises and assigns duties to all aspects of the facility in the absence of the manager, including but not limited to:
- Employees
- Facility grounds and park
- Patrons
- Equipment/chemicals as assigned
- Dearborn ‘Learn to Swim’ Deck supervisor
- Responsible for ensuring proper zone scanning is being conducted
Performs life guarding/instruction duties as assigned.
Attends all training sessions/in-service training and staff meetings.
Assists with grounds maintenance and cleanliness of pool/park as assigned, including bathhouses.
Works in cooperation with other Head Lifeguards and Recreation Management.
Displays mature approach to patrons, co-workers and work flexible hours.
May be assigned to function as a water safety instructor, which includes teaching swim lessons.
Wears required uniform.
Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
May be assigned some office-type duties

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have reliable transportation to comply with regular and predictable attendance requirement.REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Current Lifeguard Training and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications on file with the City.EXAMINATION PROCEDURE:
- Qualified applicants will be scheduled for an interview.
- Hired applicants must be able to pass a Lifeguard test:
- Swim 200 yards in under 4 minutes.
- Retrieve a brick from the bottom of a 10- 13.5-foot pool, surface and tread water with the brick, in both hands and above the surface, for 1 minute.
- Swim with a suspected spinal victim, with head immobilized, for 15 yards.
