Lake Patrol team members work first or second shift with a schedule of 5 days on, followed by 3 days off. The position requires being able to work days, nights, and weekends as scheduled and working Memorial Day, July 4th, and the June 7 -8 boat races.
This seasonal role focuses on enforcing boating safety laws and regulations for recreational facilities and watershed management in the municipal lake area. Responsibilities include assisting in emergencies, performing light maintenance on docks and facilities, and supervising lake activities. The job is outdoors in various weather conditions and may involve swimming in the lake.
Lake Patrol & Safety Enforcement:- Operate patrol and work boats; use two-way radios to report violations and resolve issues.
- Enforce no-wake zones, horsepower limits, boating permits, and other lake regulations.
- Inspect boats and equipment, sell permits, collect fees, and patrol lake events.
- Provide courtesy patrols on Lake Decatur and in public areas.
- Assist in emergencies, perform rescues, administer first aid, and apply CPR when necessary.
- Educate the public on water safety and respond to complaints or inquiries about regulations.
- Maintain safety equipment such as "no wake" buoys and signs around the lake.
- Perform landscaping tasks, including mowing, planting, and debris removal.
- Clean and perform minor repairs on boats, equipment, and lake facilities.
- Prepare work reports, perform data entry, and handle light filing.
- Assist with general operational tasks to ensure smooth lake activities
- Strong swimming skills and the ability to perform rescues in crisis situations.
- Proficiency in first aid, CPR, and lifesaving techniques for emergencies, including drowning and shock.
- Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions during emergencies.
- Ability to lift, stoop, reach, and handle heavy objects as needed.
- Familiarity with city codes, department policies, and relevant regulations.
- Basic knowledge of manual tools, maintenance materials, and office equipment.
- Proficiency in data entry, filing, and Microsoft Office software.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public, including in challenging situations.
- Capable of understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Skilled in preparing standard work reports and documentation.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in general maintenance or service work involving public interaction.
- Lifeguard and motorboat operating experience (preferred).
- Completion of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration Course before employment starts. (The City of Decatur will pay for this training, if it is needed.)
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must be at least 18 years old by the employment start date.
