What are the responsibilities and job description for the Service Worker position at City of Decatur?
This position involves routine construction and maintenance work. Job tasks do not require manipulative skills or previous experience. Some assignments may include using power tools or maintenance equipment.
Salary will increase to $24.01 per hour after completion of the six-month probationary period.
Typical work examples, but not limited to the following:
- Help prepare concrete work; assist in pouring and finishing concrete; operate air hammer to tear out asphalt and concrete; patch holes in streets.
- Drive a dump truck to haul deicers, tree limbs, work materials and equipment.
- Drive a snowplow; spread deicers; clean catch basins; fill and tamp excavations.
- Assist in setting up sewer rodding machines as well as traffic control signs and barricades.
- Assist in sewer calls by entering manholes and sewer lines to place or remove jetting equipment in the sewer.
- Assist in traffic sign and post installation; help apply traffic lines.
- Use an end loader to load trucks with work materials, debris and deicers.
- Operate small hand tools such as concrete saws, power blowers and chainsaws.
- Plant flowers and shrubs on lake property; paint boat house and facilities; make minor building repairs.
- Assist in tree planting, trimming and removal; stump removal; mowing of City property; building and ground maintenance; parking lot maintenance; assist in community clean-up projects.
- Perform related work and other duties as assigned.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent; experience in general laborer work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Possess or obtain a valid CDL driver's license issued by the State of Illinois within the six-month probationary period. The City will enroll employees in this training and pay for it.
- Knowledge of the practices, procedures, materials and equipment used in Public Works maintenance and repair work.
- Knowledge of standard manual work tools.
- Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions. Ability to deal with the public in general and difficult work situations.
- Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform strenuous manual tasks for prolonged periods under adverse weather conditions.
Applicants must successfully complete all portions of the selection process:
- Written Examination. Applicants must obtain a passing score of at least 70.00%.
- Oral Interview. Applicants passing the written test must pass an oral interview with a minimum score of 70.00%.
- Veteran Points: Applicants passing the written test and oral interview may be eligible to receive 5.00 veteran preference points added to their final examination score.
- Seniority Points. Applicable persons receiving a score of 70.00% or more will receive 0.50 seniority preference points for each full year of continuous City of Decatur AFSCME service. A maximum of 10.0 points may be added to the final examination score.
- Physical Examination: Applicants placed on the eligible register must pass a physical examination including a drug screen.
Residency
The Service Worker position is covered under the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) collective bargaining agreement. AFSCME employees shall reside within the corporate limits of Macon County or any municipality extending into Macon County. An appointee may reside outside said limits but must comply no later than 90 days after the completion of the six-month probationary period.
