What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Swim Lesson Instructor position at City of Deer Park?
The swim instructor’s responsibilities include evaluating each student’s performance during swim sessions and providing feedback, completing attendance, progress, and accident reports, and ensuring that all swimming aids and equipment are in good working order. The main responsibility is the safety of all students in our program at all times.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instructs children in swim lessons; maintains paperwork necessary for instructor documentation.
- Thorough knowledge and application of swimming and water safety skills.
- Thorough knowledge and application of teaching swimming and water safety skills.
- An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies, and procedures.
- Responsible for proper instruction of all swim lesson classes.
- Maintain a safe and controlled environment; identify hazardous conditions and eliminate or minimize them.
- Communicate regularly with participants and their parents, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of progress.
- Adheres to posted job schedule.
- Punctual when reporting for duty, shows up no less than 15 minutes before the start of a class.
- Act in a professional manner at all times.
- Provide quality customer service.
- Communicates effectively with all levels of staff.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Experience:
- Must be at least 15 years of age
- Ability to self-motivate with little or no supervision.
Language Skills:
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:
- Willingness to obtain Jeff Ellis Swim (JES) Swim Instructor License,
- Certification is valid for one year.
- Maintain a valid Healthcare Provider CPR and First Aid Certification issued by a nationally recognized service provider.
- Attend four (4) hours of in-service per month issued by the employer.

- Swim Instructors must be emotionally stable, sincerely enjoy teaching, and be comfortable in the company of children.
- Swim Instructors must convey a professional demeanor that is both caring and calming to children.
- Swim Instructors must possess personal motivational skills that positively encourage children to explore and learn.
- Swim Instructors must exhibit personal maturity deemed appropriate to serve as a positive role model for children.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to perform and properly demonstrate all skills included in the course level for which you seek teaching authorization, with instructor level proficiency.
- Must swim 50 yards of front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, and 25 yards of butterfly. Tread water for 2 minutes and surface dive.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- Interviews will be offered via email. During the interview, all applicants will be required to perform a swim test.
- Swim Test: The swim test consists of a 100-meter continuous swim (breaststroke and front crawl), retrieval of a ten-pound brick from 5ft of water, and treading water.
- All offers are conditional upon the successful and favorable results of a background check and drug screen. More information on these items will be provided at the time of the offer.
