JOB SUMMARY: This position controls and extinguishes fires, protects life and property, provides advance life support services (ALS), and maintains equipment as a volunteer or employee of the city. Typical work schedule will be a twenty-four-hour shift followed by forty-eight hours off-duty. Subject to be called in on a holiday or during an emergency.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.
- Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls. Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire.
- Drives fire department apparatus to emergency scene or other assignment.
· Responds to emergency calls including fires and fire alarms, emergency medical calls, hazardous conditions, and other emergency situations.
· Performs firefighting duties, perform rescue activities, provide emergency medical care, ALS and stabilize hazardous situations.
· Positions and climb ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from burning structures.
· Operates and maintains firefighting apparatus, equipment, and tools.
· Administers first aid and artificial respiration to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.
- Participates in drills, demonstrations, and courses in hydraulics, pump operation and maintenance, and firefighting techniques.
- Uses extrication equipment, including spreaders, shears, and rams, for extrication.
- Works in areas with regular hazards, such as: fire, explosions, hazardous chemicals, fire gases, traffic, dogs, hysterical relatives, unfamiliar surroundings, and electricity.
- Adheres to all safety rules and regulations.
- Adheres to work schedule and attendance requirements.
- Performs other duties as directed and required.
- Must create a positive public image as a representative of the city.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of modern fire suppression methods and equipment.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of fire rescue equipment and vehicles.
- Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and techniques.
- Skilled in dealing with the general public and able to handle stressful situations.
- Ability to perform clean-up and salvage operations.
- Ability to use all safety equipment, including body substance isolation and personal protective equipment, as assigned.
- Ability to create openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance, using ax, chisel, crowbar, electric saw, and other power equipment.
- Ability to communicate with superior during fire, using portable two-way radio.
- Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical, or diagrammatic form; to make independent judgments in the absence of assistance; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
- Ability to record and deliver information and to issue and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in English in a variety of ways to be effective within the parameters of the job.
- Ability to be adaptable performing under stress when confronted with emergencies.
- Ability to follow orders from officers and co-workers at the fire department and other entities.

QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Requires Certification as a Firefighter II by the State of Florida, Certification as Paramedic by the State of Florida. Must submit to a background check and be of good moral character. Be in good physical condition and require a valid Florida class E driver’s license with 16 hours of (E.V.O.C.) Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.
Hours Worked: Firefighters work 24 hours on and 48 hours off with Kelly days.
