Part time hours, temporary for swimming pool season only
Tentative start date May 1ST for private parties.... June 3RD for public swim.
Season will conclude on August 3rd.
Must be available to work as scheduled. Pool operations are Tuesday thru Sunday.
City will reimburse fees for NEWLY obtained 2025 lifeguard certification; 1/2 the amount at the start, 1/2 if completes entire pool season.
The Lifeguard Certification course this year will begin on Friday, April 11 and conclude on Sunday, April 13.
Lifeguards and pool managers to have orientation on Monday, April 28 in time for the first pool party later that week.

JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, ensures the safety of patrons using pools and renders assistance in emergency situations. Supervises Lifeguards and performs other related managerial duties as required/assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Schedules, assigns and trains lifeguards on pool duties (slides, baby pool, etc).
- Assures that adequate staffing is available for general admission and pool parties in order to meet public safety needs.
- Monitors and observes the activities and behavior of pool patrons and ensures that pool rules and safety practices are followed in order to maintain a safe swimming pool environment.
- Ensures that safety practices and specific pool rules are adhered to fairly and impartially.
- Performs basic first aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on infants, children and adults in cases of emergency.
- Maintains clean and safe swimming areas and surrounding park grounds for patron usage.
- Prepares accident/incident reports as required.
- Ensures a quality, public service-oriented work environment.
- Monitors facility use and assists in the preparation of the facility for patron use.
- Inspects the pool area, grounds, facilities and equipment for safety and proper working condition.
- Responsible for daily deposits and cash register money.
- Collects pool admission fees.
- Greets patrons; and provides information regarding hours of operations, other policies and general information courteously and effectively.
- Assigns and performs maintenance and custodial duties before, during and after pool hours.
- Maintain chlorine/bromine, ph. levels and safety requirements according to Health Department guidelines.
- Backwashes pool filters and maintains equipment in working order.
- Responsible for opening and closing pool facilities. Institutes gate control.
- Works closely with Parks & Recreation Department staff.
- Completes and submits all daily forms required by the Parks and Recreation Office/ Department.
- Responsible for maintaining accurate records of Lifeguard timesheets and hours worked.
- Submits all timesheets and any necessary accompanying documentation to Parks & Recreation Department office when due.
- Required to arrive to work on time; and work a varied schedule of hours that may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must also be available to perform lifeguarding duties as needed.
- Attends all lifeguarding trainings as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
- Receives supervision from the Recreation Coordinator and Parks Superintendent.
- Supervises Lifeguard positions, schedules and assigns duties, monitors work performance.
- Expected to refer matters that do not fit a clear pattern to supervisor for proper guidance and instruction.
- Has no authority to process disciplinary action.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The principal duties of this position are performed in an outdoor environment under extreme weather conditions. Required to work under prolonged exposure to the sun and extreme heat and humidity conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to run, swim, stand and sit for long periods, stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms, and talks and hears from close and long distances in an environment that is busy and noisy. Exposure to pool chemicals and other irritants.
ALCOHOL AND DRUG TESTING POLICY: This position is subject to the City of Del Rio’s Alcohol and Drug Testing Policy which includes Pre-employment testing, Post-Accident Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion Testing, Return to Duty Testing, and Follow-Up Testing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Experience as a Lifeguard and/or prior aquatics experience is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must possess good leadership skills.
- Skilled in cash handling practices and procedures.
- Skilled in the principles/techniques of lifeguarding
- Ability to perform all types of pool rescue.
- Knowledge of the practices and techniques of water safety. Contributes effectively to the safety of self, co-workers, and the general public.
- Knowledge of methods for keeping water and surrounding areas safe for public use.
- Ability to observe and interpret people and situations.
- Ability to handle medical emergencies and injuries in a calm and effective manner.
- Ability to swim and pull weight through water.
- Ability to pass a medical physical examination.
- Knowledge and ability to perform safe work practices.
- Skilled in providing high level customer service.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, other City staff, and the general public.
- Ability to safely handle and use chemicals.
