Job Description
IRRIGATION TECHNICIAN I
Dept: Parks and Recreation Exempt: No
Reports to: Superintendent Hours: 40 per week
Hourly Wage: $20.36
SUMMARY: The irrigation technician performs installations, diagnostics and troubleshooting on irrigation related problems and equipment in the Parks and Recreation Department. Duties may be performed under adverse weather or working conditions. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Superintendent.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designs irrigation systems to determine layout and locations of proposed sprinkler heads, pipe locations, and verifies design plans with topography to ensure consistency of blue-prints with actual requirements of the location.
- Installs irrigation systems by assembling pipe, valves, timing devices, program controllers, and other related hardware to complete new sprinkler systems or modify existing systems.
- Perform necessary adjustments to valves, heads and pump station.
- Some understanding of sports turf maintenance as this is required when not performing irrigation duties.
- Acts as consultant to diagnose and troubleshoot irrigation problems.
- Perform irrigation maintenance functions requiring manual dexterity and precision measurements.
- Reviews and makes revisions on proposed irrigation designs to assure they meet the City’s specifications and standards.
- Operates heavy equipment to facilitate the installation or modification to irrigation systems.
- Maintains detailed records of maintenance activities and completed work orders.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: The position requires two years of experience in work which involves irrigation systems, hand tools, simple power tools, and heavy equipment used in the trade. Direct knowledge of Volusia County water ways is required. Irrigation ordinance is required.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) from an U.S. Department of Education accredited institution is required.
- Two (2) years work experience involving irrigation ordinance, irrigation systems, hand tools, simple power tools, and heavy equipment used in the trade is required.
- Experience in and direct knowledge of Volusia County water ways is required.
- Must have a firm understanding of Variable Frequency Drive pump station for maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of irrigation layouts, head and line placements for various sports turf layouts for potential of complete installation.
- Must have a firm understanding of the relationship between irrigation system and sports turf.
- An equivalent combination of education, experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered for minimum requirements.
LICENSES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possess and maintain a valid CDL class “B” motor vehicles operator's license or higher issued by the State of Florida with an acceptable driving record is preferred.

- Knowledge of installation and operation or irrigation systems and skill in irrigation system layout.
- Skill in preparing simple reports.
- Skill in working from drawings, blueprints, plans, and specifications
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ADA: This job requires walking, standing, pushing, bending, stooping, equipment operation and driving. Employee may work in an office environment or outside in various weather conditions in addition to a wet climate/environment. Working in or with moving vehicles and/or equipment may be required as well as working from heights, in dusty condition, with hands, feet, and/or legs in water and may handle chemicals.
