Summary

This requisition expires on February 14, 2025, but may close earlier if the position is filled prior to the expiration date.

Responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing a comprehensive volunteer program for Animal Services including, but not limited to, leading special events, marketing and education initiatives, assisting with budget preparation, and ensuring quality customer service.

DUTIES

  • Oversee, develop, and implement all aspects of a comprehensive Animal Services volunteer program including, but not limited to, recruitment, training, recognition, and retention initiatives.
  • Research best practices; create and maintain volunteer Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), job descriptions, and training materials; ensure training and compliance with volunteers' work.
  • Establish performance measures, prepare reports, analyze data, and report trends and / or issues.
  • Identify areas for improvement and provide recommendations for program adjustments; implement approved changes and / or new programs.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders including, but not limited to, community groups and organizations, to support the department's volunteer needs and cultivate partnerships to support program and department goals to maintain an exceptional volunteer program
  • Act as liaison with volunteer agencies, public schools, universities, organizations, and other agencies to establish, implement, and maintain specialty programs.
  • Oversee appropriate marketing, communication, and community engagement efforts.
  • Coordinate, manage and collaborate with internal stakeholders on volunteer marketing initiatives and communications including, but not limited to, email alerts, social media platforms, newsletters, online marketing, and community events.
  • Represent the City on various committees and organizations.
  • Coordinate and participate in special events to promote Animal Services; participate in special projects and initiates, as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries from volunteers and fosters in a timely fashion to ensure positive engagement and quality customer service.

SUPERVISORY / BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate Animal Services volunteer staff; recommend assignment / assignment change, retention, discipline, and dismissal for Animal Services volunteer staff.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor Animal Services volunteer budget; maintain accurate budget reporting; ensure that operations are cost-effective, and funds are managed wisely.

    Job Requirements

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in Animal Services, or related field; and,
  • Two (2) years' experience in animal services, or related field; and,
  • One (1) year experience in a management or supervisory capacity; and,
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.

  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local Government laws, ordinances, and regulations.

  • Skill at the intermediate level, working with applicable Microsoft Office 365 products, and other software systems to complete work.
  • Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
  • Skill in public speaking, presenting, and teaching in small group, large group, and one-on-one situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.

  • Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure and confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle emotional aspects involved in working with an animal shelter environment including, but not limited to, the use of euthanasia.
  • Ability to comfortably and safety handle all shelter animals.
  • Ability to work independently and / or with team environment while handling multiple tasks and changing priorities with attention to detail.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor and train through direct and indirect influence.
  • Ability to develop, understand, interpret, and apply rules, policies, and procedures operations.
  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must have and maintain a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification.
  • Must pass a physical examination.

  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions in the work area and / or any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the supervisor.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing) : Yes.
  • Tools / Equipment Used : Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Posture : Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing / pulling, and twisting.
  • Motion : Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
  • Lifting : Lifting no more than 100 pounds and carrying up to 50 pounds.
  • Environment : Works in an office setting and around animals (including diseased, injured and / or potentially aggressive animals) and outside with exposure to sun, heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather, loud noise, dust, chemicals, chlorine, and odors; occasionally requires irregular and / or prolonged hours.
  • Travel : Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • Attendance : Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to outside normal business hours and overtime, as needed.
