JOB SUMMARY:

The Code Enforcement Officer reports to the Building Official and performs a variety of technical duties in support of the City’s local code enforcement program; monitors and enforces a variety of applicable ordinances, codes and regulations related to zoning, land use, nuisance codes, electrical and building codes, health and safety and other matters of public concerns.

SUPERVISION:

No supervisory responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Electrical Inspections

  • 100 amp service verification inspections for realtors and sellers
  • New service inspections and COMED notification
  • New commercial and residential rough-in inspections
  • Commercial and residential final electrical inspections for occupancy
  • Phone and office electrical consultation
  • Inspect existing building electrical complaints (tenants)
  • Building and construction inspections

Property Maintenance Enforcement

  • Neighborhood complaints
  • Tenant issues
  • Interior structure, exterior structure, and yard access (weed complaints)
  • Abandoned vehicles
  • Garbage in right-of-way (ROW)

Property pin locates prior to issuing some permits

Sidewalk Program

Customer interaction, measurement of sidewalk area to be replaced and cost quotes

Verify permits for contractors and property owners for work that is being completed

Work with other departments on maintenance of city property

OTHER DUTIES: (include but are not limited to the following)

Performs other related duties as required.

This position may be requested to help in other departments on City Project on an as needed basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Formal training or certification in building inspection is preferred. Building inspection or construction experience is required; electrical experience is preferred.

Knowledge of computer systems and their application in the functions of the building department.

Ability to meet specific deadlines. Ability to be flexible and to manage and prioritize tasks.

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports from such records.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with city employees and the general public and to convey concise and accurate explanations of policies, procedures, and requirements.

Ability to interact well with other employees in an office environment. Ability to work as a member of a team and to show courtesy, consideration and respect for others.

The work environment is both an office environment that requires the ability to use and operate a personal computer and peripherals, telephone, photocopy machine, and calculator; as well as the field environment that may require work in inclement weather conditions.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $27.46 - $36.99 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
