This learning experience affords the students a view of the inner workings of city government. Each intern will have a variety of responsibilities and assigned projects that relate to their field of study. Each intern must be open to new ideas and suggestions, and be committed to completing the internship in its entirety.
SUMMER INTERN – Parks & Recreation (Athletics)
INTERNSHIP SUMMARY:
Selected students, under the supervision of the Department Director and/or Manager, will participate in a meaningful and challenging summer internship that will allow each intern to have exposure to different facets of local government, and receive critical skills, and career and personal development training. Interns will work on a wide variety of tasks and projects within a cross-functional team of professionals and get exposure to leaders within the organization.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
The intern will assist with various aspects of athletics program management, including but not limited to:
- Program Support & Administration
- Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing of youth and adult sports leagues, tournaments, and recreational activities.
- Support participant registration, scheduling, and team assignments.
- Help maintain accurate records, reports, surveys, and evaluations for programs.
- Event Coordination & Logistics
- Assist in organizing special events, including set-up, operation, and breakdown.
- Ensure equipment, supplies, and facilities are properly prepared for games, practices, and recreational activities.
- Provide on-site support during athletic events, including scorekeeping, officiating, and customer service.
- Facility & Equipment Management
- Conduct routine inspections of athletic fields, courts, and facilities to ensure safety and proper maintenance.
- Assist in inventory management and distribution of sports equipment and supplies.
- Community Engagement & Customer Service
- Assist the point of contact for athletic program participants, parents, coaches, and community members.
- Assist in marketing outreach efforts to promote athletic programs, including social media updates and flyer distribution.
- Gather participant feedback and assist in program surveys.
- Assumptions & Constraints
- Internship hours will be based on departmental and division needs, the intern’s availability, the intern’s practicum hours, with potential evening and weekend shifts required.
- The intern is expected to adhere to the City of Douglasville Parks and Recreation Department’s policies, safety protocols, dress code, and professional conduct standards.
- Access to facilities, equipment, and resources will be provided as necessary.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
A Junior, Senior, or recent Graduate (within the last year), majoring in Business Administration, Public Administration, Sports Management or related major preferred; Attention to detail, the ability to multi-task and excellent oral and written communications skills are all essential to this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the operation of general office equipment including calculator, computer keyboard, computer word processing or other programs, telephone, telephone console, or copy machine as required
- Knowledge of basic mathematical and accounting procedures
- Skill in operating a computer
- Skill in communicating both orally and in written form
- Skill in researching complex issues and developing recommended actions
- Ability to develop, implement and evaluate new and revised procedures, methods and standards
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise considerable skill in information handling, privacy of records and judgment
- Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is sedentary work and requires speaking and talking.

Incumbent works in a safe and secure work environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands.

Typically, 30 hours per week; The rate of pay will be paid at $20 per hour.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- United States citizen or authorized to work in the United States
- Current enrollment in a Georgia college, university, or technical school (or recently graduate within the last year)
- Current grade point average of 3.0 or better
