Do you want to work with a dynamic and experienced Recreation Team that values innovation, training and growth? Then look no further for the perfect internship for you!

The purpose of the Recreation Internship is to provide you with professional development and experience in the field of recreation; more specifically, Preschool, Youth & Teen aged programming. Interns may be asked to serve as a program assistant at our programs or special events as needed.

Scheduling/Availability
  • Interns work an average of 15-20 hours per week
  • We will work with the successful candidate to finalize their schedule based upon their school/class commitments
  • The successful candidate will be required to work some evening and weekend hours as needed or assigned
Intern Pay Structure
Undergraduate Freshman: $15.00/hour
Undergraduate Sophomore: $15.50/hour
Undergraduate Junior: $16.00/hour
Undergraduate Senior: $16.50/hour
First Year Graduate Student: $17.50/hour
Second Year Graduate Student: $19.00/hour

Examples of duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Office work and organization such as maintaining records, filing, copying, preparing outgoing mail and database management
  • Creation of flyers and literature for distribution to the public promoting programs, events, seasonal staffing and employment opportunities
  • Attend Recreation Department and Preschool, Youth & Teen team meetings
  • Assist Program Coordinator with programming logistics: shopping for programming supplies, organizing and preparing materials for various programs, reviewing program curriculum needs, drafting email communications and newsletters, participant communication and more
  • Assist with program design and implementation: Plan and lead specific, age-appropriate activities for seasonal program offerings, effectively communicate with children and adults and manage large and small groups, participate and assist in the execution of program activities, etc.
  • Additional assignments may also include assisting various staff with the daily operations of recreational programs as needed
Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an undergrad or graduate degree seeking program in Recreation Administration, Sports & Leisure, Outdoor Education, or a related field of study
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work independently
  • Previous experience in a recreation or sports related environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a strong attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of college level course work in recreation, education, or related field; OR two or more years work experience in a recreation related field
  • Interest in and a strong basic knowledge of recreation based programs
  • Experience managing or working with students in any setting
Other Requirements
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings
  • Regular, predictable and punctual attendance
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with people from different backgrounds
  • Evaluate recreation programs and environment and provide input to support staff and supervisors
  • Abide by mandatory reporting policies as described in the staff manual
  • Accept other responsibilities deemed necessary by your supervisor in order to ensure quality service to all programs and participants
  • Perform duties assigned to the best of your ability, and with a positive attitude

Creativity: Comes up with of new and unique ideas; easily makes connections among previously unrelated notions; tends to be seen as original and value-added in brainstorming settings.

Supplemental Information: All positions within this job classification have been designated as Casual in nature and all employees serving in such positions are considered to be Casual Employees. Casual employees serve strictly at the pleasure of the City and their employment may be terminated at any time for any reason, with or without cause.
