What are the responsibilities and job description for the Durango Municipal Court Marshal position at City of Durango?
As a sworn, P.O.S.T.-certified officer, you will also support the Durango Police Department with technical and administrative law enforcement duties, including but not limited to crime prevention, protection of life and property, and public service.
About Our Lateral Entry Program:
We offer a lateral entry program for officers who are certified by the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) or possess equivalent certifications from other states that meet Colorado P.O.S.T. criteria. To recognize and reward experience, we provide competitive bonuses:
- $3,000 bonus for officers with 1-3 years of experience
- $6,000 for officers with 3 or more years of experience
Facility Security:
- Stand for extended periods, monitoring the public courtroom entrance.
- Perform a general security check of the courtroom and surrounding area prior to and after court sessions and City Council meetings.
- Greet everyone coming through the public entrance of the courtroom and assess them for violations of safety protocols. Deny entrance as required.
- Provide information on court schedules and proceedings.
- Escort defendants to the Clerk’s Office to pay fines.
- Transport prisoners to Municipal Court.
- Periodic overnight transport of juvenile detainees to regional detention centers.
- Patrol a designated area of the city to maintain law and order, prevent crime, enforce laws and ordinances, and check buildings for security.
- Respond to emergency situations, including personal and property crimes such as assaults, traffic accidents, burglaries, domestic disturbances, civil complaints, property control, and related misdemeanor and felony incidents.
- Collect, process, photograph and present evidence including fingerprints, fibers, blood and related physical evidence to investigate incidents of crime.
- Enforce traffic laws and ordinances; check speed with radar; issue warnings and citations.
- Interview suspects, victims, and witnesses in the field.
- Document activities through reports and evidence preservation.
- Arrest and maintain custody of prisoners, administer Intoxilyzer tests, record results, and book and transfer prisoners to jail.
- Serve warrants, provide bar checks, and execute police raids.
- Provide truthful, unreserved, and credible testimony in judicial proceedings.
- Attend department-sponsored training.
- Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, procedures, and techniques, including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation, and identification techniques.
- Skill in analyzing situations quickly, making sound judgment, and taking decisive action in high-pressure environments.
- Proficiency operating all police-related equipment, including but not limited to personal computers, communication equipment, cameras, firearms, radios, alcohol detection devices, speed detection devices, and emergency vehicles.
- Understanding of criminal law, procedure, and evidence rules, as well as state and local laws and ordinances.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to de-escalate tense situations.
