Work Hours
Typical shifts are Sunday - Thursday from approximately 8/9:30pm – 4:30/6am. Hours of work are subject to change based on business needs.
- Perform daily inspections
- Change light bulbs, wash windows, vacuum, maintain restrooms, restock inventory in janitorial closets, mop floors, sweep, dust, clean carpets, strip/buff floors, paint interior/exterior surfaces, repair/patch walls, and stain/varnish woodwork
- Organize meeting rooms by setting up and taking down tables and chairs, presentation and audio-visual equipment, removing and recycling trash, and any other meeting-related preparation
- Replace air filters, clean coils and condensers, and maintain humidifiers
- Repair/replace plumbing and electrical fixtures as well as occasional routine operations associated with HVAC systems to ensure efficient operation
- Assist with set up, tear down, and wiring of modular office components, and repair office furniture
- Set up and store voting equipment as needed
- Perform exterior building maintenance including snow blowing, shoveling, sidewalk brushing, spreading sand and salt, picking up litter, waste collection and disposal, and posting messages on outdoor sign board.
- Lock and unlock buildings and perform all building security
- Identify public hazards or liabilities in and around buildings and respond in a timely and appropriate manner to correct problems or notify appropriate staff
- Assist other departments with custodial and maintenance requests or tasks as assigned
- Operate emergency generators as needed
- Maintain custodial storerooms and put away supplies as they arrive
- Operate motor vehicle to pick up parts and run errands
- Give work direction/training to other part-time employees performing cleaning/maintenance tasks
- May respond to weekend and/or evening calls for assistance regarding mechanical failures or malfunctions, snowfalls, and/or general emergencies
Other Position Functions:
- Attend seminars, educational training, and all meetings related to the position
- Answer questions and inquiries from the public and direct visitors to their destinations
- Perform other maintenance or tasks as assigned
- High School Diploma or equivalent acceptable (G.E.D.)
- Valid MN Driver’s License
- 18 years of age or older
- Two to three years’ experience in general building maintenance/minor repairs
- Two to three years’ experience in commercial janitorial tasks
- General knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems/pneumatic and electronic controls, tools, cleaning equipment, and chemicals
- Knowledge of occupational safety hazards and necessary job-related precautions
- Able to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
- Able to work independently and complete assigned duties in a productive, efficient and timely manner
- Physically capable of performing all assigned tasks under the working conditions and physical demands as described
- Able to develop and maintain good working relations with other City staff, volunteer groups, residents, and visitors
- Three to five years’ experience in general building maintenance.
- Previous experience with municipal buildings and community centers
- State of Minnesota Special Boiler License
- Class C Driver's License
- Vocational training in building maintenance and mechanical systems
- Ability to read blueprints
Working Conditions:
75% indoors at assigned buildings
25% outdoors on grounds of assigned buildings or in transport to other buildings
Employee will be required to perform physical work (snow shoveling, unloading trucks, etc.) in all weather conditions common to Minnesota, including temperature ranges from -30º F. to 100º F. and wind chills of -50º F. Emergency situations may require working in rain, sleet, snow, etc. City provided uniform is mandatory dress
Physical Demands:
- Lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to manually transport awkward loads over short distances
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distant vision and peripheral vision
- Able to stand, talk, hear, write, climb, balance, run, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, work on a ladder, and overhead
