Adaptive Program Coordinator

Status: Ongoing, part-time position, non-exempt

Salary: Starts at $21/hour

Location: Eden Prairie recreation facilities, parks. Office located at City Center.

Hours: 15 – 20 hours/week (Sept. – May); up to 40 hours/week (June – August)

Reporting Relationship: Reports to Senior Recreation Supervisor

Parks and Recreation Department

The Recreation Services Division has the responsibility in providing a variety of affordable recreation programs and services for all age groups and people of all abilities. Position Responsibilities

The Adaptive Program Coordinator –Assists the Sr. Recreation Supervisor in creating and implementing adaptive recreation programs for people with a wide range of disabilities. Coordinates programs through logistical planning of equipment and supplies. Initiates and maintains vital connections with caregivers/families to meet the needs and accommodations of the participants. Works to provide inclusion companion support and accommodations to participants as needed while they participate in programs. Additional position responsibilities and areas of impact are but not limited to:

  • Assists in the development of adaptive recreational programming, classes and/or activities. Ensures the activities are prepared and implemented to meet the City’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals as well as individual participant accommodation/modification needs.
  • Plans for program logistics and implements each program effectively on-site.
  • Provides work direction, guidance and support to program staff and prepares them to assist participants and lead activities. Assists in supervising participants and managing their needs. Completes reporting procedures for all accidents/incidents, behaviors, medications, or emergency forms.
  • Ensures inclusion companions/program staff/instructors are educated on each participant’s required supports and/or accommodations.
  • Ensures communication and feedback (both positive and constructive) is delivered in a timely manner to parents, caregivers, and inclusion companions. Represents the City of Eden Prairie in a professional manner.
  • Participates enthusiastically in all activities, providing support and guidance. Supports inclusion companion staff in behavioral management of participants.
  • Serves as an advocate for individuals with disabilities, supporting their participation in community-wide events, recreation programs and community life.

Position Requirements

  • (2) years of experience working directly with individuals with disabilities or relevant field strongly preferred.
  • Experience in leadership roles, giving work direction to others and the development and delivery of programs and activities preferred.
  • Ability to communicate and work with various leadership styles and provide necessary instruction to participants and staff.
  • Must be current or able to become certified in First Aid/CPR.
  • Ability to observe staff and participant behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforces safety regulations and emergency procedures as well as apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Physical Requirements- Must possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of participants such as prolonged standing, bending, walking long distances, running, climbing and ability to lift to 50 lbs. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid, behavior, or emergency related situations. Must be able to assist participants in an emergency.

Accountability: Follows through on commitments; focuses on appropriate tasks throughout the shift; takes responsibilities for actions both as an individual and on behalf of the organization; actions and words are in sync; follows all policies and procedures; maintains confidentiality; is prepared and punctual to all scheduled shifts.

Sound Judgment: Able to decide based on the right mixture of facts; determines a course of action after weighing and analyzing different options.
