The Skate School Assistant Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Braemar Skate School and City Classes. The Skate School Assistant Director also provides support and guidance for skate school staff.
Scope of Impact:
The duties and responsibilities of this job are performed with latitude for independent judgment in accordance with Department and City policies, Federal, State and local regulations and are based on detailed knowledge of Arena operations. Work is subject to periodic review by the supervisor, who provides input on approval of recommendations, and discusses assignments, priorities, and work
Incumbent provides training and work direction to part time staff. Work includes direct and frequent contact with the public.
- On Ice Responsibilities
- Ensures all the instructors and assistants are present and ready for class;
- Ensures all the supplies are ready to go before each class;
- Clipboards are organized with stickers on them and pages in order
- All the mats, walkers, toys, color dot signs, and cones are near the ice for the resurface
- Music has been tested and ready to play
- Signage for directions is up for the first day
- Directs assistants to put out the supplies on the ice during resurface;
- Greets the skaters and assist with ice entry and exit in a safe manner;
- Starts the music which will loop each half hour;
- Assists instructors with skaters that need extra help and assist with coaching ideas if they are a newer coach;
- Assigns Assistants to the coaches who need extra help. Keep an eye on the classes and look for issues;
- Works one on one with the skater who is scared and doesn’t want to come on the ice;
- Ties skates for kids that come with skates that are too loose;
- Checks the fit of skates for skaters who are struggling;
- Talks to parents who have questions;
- Takes care of any skater who has a fall or becomes injured;
- Assesses classes and participants. Move participants to appropriate classes based on skill;
- Cleans up at the end of the day. Direct staff to put supplies in the Skate School office;
- Sets up clip board each week for instructors.
- Performs other duties and activities as assigned.
The job requires a high school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of two years of experience in a recreation facility setting including direct knowledge and experience in ice skating and in the instruction of inexperienced skaters. Must maintain membership in Learn to Skate USA.
Desired Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in a related field is desired. An understanding of teaching methodologies and Learn to Skate USA policies and procedures also desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required for Successful Job Performance:
- Experience in and working knowledge of ice skating;
- Knowledge of and ability to operate standard office software sufficient to create schedules, draft reports and maintain records;
- Verbal and written communication skills sufficient to effectively present information and respond to questions from a wide variety of audiences and conduct public speaking, and reading comprehension skills sufficient to read, understand and interpret varied work-related materials;
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and/or convey information, give and receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships;
- Ability to adapt to seasonal changes in work schedule, load and work type;
- Ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultural, economic, and ethnic backgrounds;
- Problem solving skills.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Physical effort is light, with lifting, pushing or carrying up to 25 pounds intermittently. Ninety percent of time is spent working on the ice. The employee will spend an extended period of time working in an ice arena and ice skating setting.
Working Conditions:
The majority of work is performed in an ice area. Interruptions are frequent. The job may involve dealing with and calming customers who are emotionally charged over an issue. The employee will spend an extended period of time working in an ice arena (cold environment) and ice skating.
