About this Position
The Edmond Fire Department seeks individuals with high integrity, honesty, compassion, and moral character. A desire to serve, a strong work ethic, and the ability to communicate well with others are essential.
The Firefighter Recruit participates in emergency and non-emergency response, training, public education, prevention activities, and maintenance for facilities, apparatus, and equipment. They shall serve internal and external customers with the highest of core character qualities including integrity, trustworthiness, professionalism, dedication, and ethics.
Edmond Fire Department works a Modified Kelly System. Working within one of three 24-hour shifts (red, green, or blue). In a five-day tour of duty, you should expect to work three (3) days with a day off between each day. At the end of the five (5) days, you have four (4) days off.

Responsibilities
- Inspect, maintain, and clean all assigned apparatus, equipment, and facilities (including but not limited to various fire apparatus, SCBA, bunker gear, small engines, hand tools, medical equipment, fire stations, storage buildings/areas, and grounds)
- Perform minor maintenance and/or repairs on the apparatus and equipment
- Record and report any apparatus and/or equipment maintenance or repairs
- Provide both emergency and non-emergency response to various fire, medical, and rescue-type incidents (including but not limited to laying/connecting hose lines, directing water/fog streams, utilizing ladders, ventilating, search and rescue, CPR, patient assessment, treatment of medical or trauma patients, extrication, high/low angle rescue, water rescue, and various hazmat incidents)
- Perform and train for public education and fire prevention activities (including but not limited to fire drills, target hazard surveys, apparatus demonstrations, station tours, smoke alarm installation and recognition, and preservation of evidence of fire cause and/or possible arson)
- As assigned, safely drive crew members and equipment to the scene of emergencies and non-emergencies in assigned apparatus while possibly driving under adverse conditions
- As assigned, safely drive crew members in assigned apparatus to run errands or other duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor or acting supervisor
- Perform record keeping and completion of computer forms for daily truck checks when assigned
- Train for response to various emergency and non-emergency incidents, including fire, medical, and rescue situations (including but not limited to classroom, self-study, hands-on, mock drills, written, and practical testing)
Required Training
- Must successfully complete the Edmond Fire Department Recruit Academy within a time frame determined by the Fire Chief or his designee
- Must obtain IFSAC Firefighter I and II certification within first year of employment
- Must possess or obtain a minimum certification of a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) within 18 months of hire
- Must maintain EMT National Registry Certification throughout employment
- Must maintain the Department of Transportation Emergency Vehicle Operations Course Certification (or equivalent) as provided by the City
- Must pass a pulmonary function test and quantitative fit test once every year, and be medically cleared by a Physician or Licensed Health Care Professional (PLHCP) to wear a respirator

Minimum Requirements
- 18 to 44 years of age (unless currently within the Firefighter Pension System)
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Citizen of the United States (or resident alien status)
- No felony convictions
- Basic computer skills
- Meets all requirements of the Oklahoma Firefighters Pension and Retirement System
- Possesses, or is able to obtain, a valid Oklahoma driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Working knowledge of the operation of all related equipment
- Thorough knowledge of hydrants, fire sprinklers, standpipes, major structures, street locations, and pre-fire plans
- Knowledge of modern firefighting, rescue, EMS, and prevention principles, practices, and methods
- Knowledge of the operations and maintenance of the various types of apparatus and equipment used in firefighting and rescue activities
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
- Able to meet established mental, physical, and medical requirements, including good physical strength and agility
- Able to operate both as a member of a team and independently at incidents of uncertain duration
- Able to work under very stressful conditions for extended periods of time if necessary
- Able to evaluate fire, recognize danger, and take immediate action necessary for the protection of life and property
- Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions in order to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions
- Able to display tact and judgment in making work decisions
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public
- Able to rely on speech as well as senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency, maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in a confusing, chaotic, and potentially life-threatening environment throughout the duration of an operation
- Able to transmit, receive, and disseminate orders and/or information over the radio while following radio procedures
- Able to work for long periods of time that require sustained physical activity and intense concentration
- Able to make rapid transitions from rest to near-maximal-exertion without warm-up periods
- Able to perform physically demanding work in hot, Immediately-Dangerous-to-Life-or-Health (IDLH) atmospheres with fluctuations in temperature while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body cooling mechanisms
- Able to perform essential functions under the following working conditions, including but not limited to:
- Atmospheres that are hot and/or Immediately-Dangerous-to-Life-or-Health (IDLH) with fluctuations in temperature
- Areas with slippery, hazardous surfaces such as on rooftops or ladders
- Areas where sustaining traumatic or thermal injuries is possible
- Areas with potential exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos and/or toxic substances such as hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents, either through inhalation or skin contact
- Areas with potential exposure to infectious agents such as hepatitis B or HIV
- Working while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body cooling mechanisms
- Performing physically demanding work while wearing positive pressure or tight-fitting air purifying respirator breathing equipment
- Performing complex tasks during life-threatening emergencies
- Working while exposed to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma and burn victims
