This is general duty police work in enforcing laws and ordinances. An employee of this class is responsible for the protection of life and property; for the prevention, detection, and investigation of crime; and for maintaining law and order. Work involves an element of danger and may be performed either in plain clothes or in uniform. The police officer is engaged in constant and varied contact with the public which requires the exercise of individual initiative.
Police officers perform with a great degree of independent judgment within well-defined guidelines and laws. They must be able to make fast decisions with authority in emergency situations. Special assignments are received from supervisors and are carried out in accordance with established rules and procedures. Employees must, however, be able to react with discretion, dispatch, and authority in meeting emergencies.

Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned area of City, by car, motorcycle, bicycle, on foot, or by watercraft
- Enforce state and federal laws and City ordinances; issue citations; and patrol and examine buildings and residences to detect suspicious conditions and handle situations accordingly
- Operate a motor vehicle for extended periods of time in all environmental conditions, and on occasion, operate the vehicle in diverse conditions in as safe a manner as possible
- Direct traffic in congested and emergency areas and report safety hazards; respond to scenes of accidents and administer first aid; investigate cause and file accident reports; issue citations to violators of traffic laws
- Visit the scene of crimes and accidents; search for and preserve evidence; investigate and interview victims, witnesses and potential suspects; apprehend those suspected of crimes in accordance with State Law; participate in line-ups; make oral and written reports; and provide testimony in court
- Speak before citizens and citizen's groups and participate in various training sessions
- Perform duties such as: K-9 unit to conduct field and building searches; motorcycle patrol; bicycle patrol; SWAT Team; Bomb Squad; criminal investigation; lake patrol; or special services as assigned
- Perform extensive background investigations on applicants, as assigned
- Take and develop photographs, and take fingerprints, as assigned
- Confer with juveniles and parents of juveniles and make or suggest referrals to resource agencies, as required
- Prepare special reports using data compiled from police records; and research and report on various police administration topics, as required
- Investigate unusual crowds of people; watch for and make investigations of wanted and missing persons and property; and check cars and persons engaged in suspicious activity
- Answer and investigate citizen complaints and reports
- Give information to motorists concerning location of streets, routes, and buildings
- Log and safeguard property held as evidence until surrendered to property and evidence personnel
- Enforce safety rules and encourage safety application for employees, conforming to the safety guidelines set by the City of Edmond
- Must be at least twenty-one (21) years old
- Must be less than 46 years of age on 10/06/2025
- Must be a United States citizen
- Must be able to pass the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System's medical standards and be State certified
- Must be able to pass a written Cognitive Test and Physical Agility Test
- Must have the ability to pass the State Law Enforcement Academy (C.L.E.E.T.) certification test, and the City of Edmond Field Training and Evaluation Program
- If applicable, must have or be able to receive a discharge from military duty under honorable conditions. (Honorable, General, etc.)
- Must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid Oklahoma driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier (If required to operate a motorcycle or other vehicle requiring special endorsement or licensing, employee must obtain endorsement or proper licensing as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles.)
- Must possess basic computer knowledge
- Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Must have an excellent history of personal conduct, behavior, and employment as determined by a background investigation and polygraph examination
- Must be in good physical condition
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to acquire, within a short training period, a knowledge of modern approved principles, practices, and procedures of police work, controlling laws and ordinances, the geography of the community, and the location of important buildings
- Possess a high level of intelligence and emotional stability as demonstrated through professional testing and interviews including the MMPI (Minnesota Multiple Personality Inventory)
- Possess the abilities of oral expression, decision making, and leadership as demonstrated to an oral interview board
- Ability to learn the operation of a two-way radio; the use of a walkie-talkie in field situations, and to effectively operate radar equipment; breathalyzer equipment; and to perform routine preventative maintenance on vehicles
- Ability to read, understand and communicate ordinances, laws, and other operating procedures; and to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to set positive example, as this position is one of very high integrity
- Ability and willingness to maintain information confidentially
- Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for work performed
- Ability to investigate crimes and do reports in a timely and legible manner

- Ability to work rotating shifts, extended hours, emergency call out, and to testify at court on days off
- Visual acuity to read and review written correspondence, reports, statistical and technical information, maps, identify suspects, detect danger, read licenses and tags, etc. (Vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye, no worse than 20/30 in the other eye.)
- Possession of aural acuity to understand conversation in quiet and noisy environments, communicate clearly and distinctly by telephone and face-to-face, understand radio transmissions, determine location of persons in distress, etc.
- Strength to pull, lift, push 50-pound objects on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis
- Flexibility to bend, twist, reach; mobility to climb, crawl, walk; and stamina to exert self throughout the day in all weather conditions
- Skill in foot/hand/eye coordination and high degree of concentration as required when operating vehicle, cycle, handgun, and other equipment required to fulfill essential job duties
