This recruitment is accepting applications for the positions listed below.

There are three (3) seasonal positions, all scheduled to work 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, March - November including:

  • One (1) position Tuesday - Saturday
  • One (1) position Sunday - Thursday
  • One (1) position Monday - Friday

Working weekends will be required for all 3 positions. This position primarily assists full time staff in the Parks Maintenance Program and reports to the Parks Manager.

This Limited Term position is eligible for certain employee benefits such as: enrollment in Medical, Dental and Vision insurance; Flexible Spending Arrangement for Medical, Day Care and Transportation; DRS PERS Enrollment (WA State Pension System); Sick Leave accrued at 1 hour for every 40 hours worked. Additional Benefits may be available depending on number of hours worked and eligibility for union membership.
 
About the Position
Parks Maintenance Laborers perform a variety of routine grounds maintenance work for City parks and facilities and assist with a variety of special projects as assigned. Under close supervision, assists with the cleaning and maintaining City parks, trails, open spaces, recreation facilities and amenities and other city-owned locations; plants, fertilizes and maintains lawns, plants, trees, shrubs and landscaped areas; operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment.  Per the Teamsters CBA, this position is eligible for partial union membership after 347 hours worked in a twelve-month consecutive period. (See CBA 1.2)

New hires generally start between STEP 1 and STEP 3. Placement within the position's full wage scale is based on qualification and professional experience. The full wage scale for this position is based on:

  • <347 hours worked will be in the Hourly Pay Grade H-10. Between $21.92 and $26.65 per hour
  • >347 hours worked will be in the Teamsters Pay Grade B. Between $23.98 and $29.14 per hour

About the Department
The City of Edmonds Parks, Recreation & Cultural Human Department serves as the community's key resource for providing parks, recreation and aquatic programs, maintaining parks, trails, open space and recreation facilities, street and public area landscapes, supporting culture and arts tourism, economic development and enhanced quality of life for its citizens and visitors. The City owns, operates, and maintains 47 parks and open space consisting of more than 230 acres, with 20,000 square feet of flower beds and a mile of shoreline, which is all maintained by Edmonds Parks Maintenance Division.
 
About the City 
The City of Edmonds is a beautiful community on the Puget Sound waterfront with a population of 43,420 (MRSC, 2024) and is the gateway to the Olympic peninsula via the state ferry system. Edmonds provides a full range of services, including contracted fire services, police services a municipal court, a community pool, a regional performing arts facility, public works and utilities, a regional wastewater treatment facility, along with community events and services through our Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department. Six department directors report directly to the Mayor and oversee approximately 279 full–time-equivalent employees. Essential Functions:
  • Performs landscaping and beautification activities within City parks, trails, open spaces, recreation facilities and park amenities and around City buildings including trimming, planting, fertilizing and caring for trees, and shrubs; planting, watering, edging, raking and weeding landscaped areas and hanging baskets using hand tools and small equipment.
  • Performs janitorial cleaning and maintenance of park restrooms.
  • Picks up litter and empty trash receptacles for throughout the city park system and public locations.
  • Operates a variety of equipment and tools including, but not limited to: riding lawn mower, ballfield groomer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, backpack blower, pressure washer, and pole saw.
  • Assists in the installation, repair, replacement and service to turf and landscape irrigation systems.
  • Assists with maintenance work as assigned including plumbing, sanding, painting and simple structural repairs.
  • Assist with the city’s beautification program which includes: planting, weeding and watering of hanging baskets and annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs in city streets and public landscape beds and areas.
  • Assist with Cemetery grounds maintenance which includes mowing, trimming, raking, weeding and painting. Assistance with funerals and burials as needed.
  • Safely drive and operate a City vehicle and obey all traffic laws.
  • Understand and follow current Parks, Recreation & Human Services department procedures.
  • Properly utilize personal protective equipment as required by department or City policy.
  • Performs work during evenings and on weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that are within the scope of this position classification.

Required Knowledge of:
  • Basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.
  • Operation and maintenance of hand tools and small equipment used in groundskeeping.
  • Effective communication techniques.
  • Basic computer and technical skills.

Required Skill in:
  • Communicating effectively in English.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective professional relationships.
  • Understanding and following instructions/directions.
  • Successfully completing work duties independently or as part of a team. 
  • Performing a variety of maintenance work in the preparation of and maintenance of park grounds, including plants, lawn areas and recreation and facilities and amenities.
  • Performing general ground maintenance duties including mowing, edging and weeding.
  • Utilizing tools and equipment used in grounds maintenance work.
  • Operating light power and mechanical equipment used in the care and maintenance of trees, shrubs and landscaped areas.
  • Observing health and safety regulations.
Basic Requirements: 
  • At least 18 years of age by time of hire.
  • Prior experience with any of the following: landscape maintenance and beautification activities including trimming, planting, fertilizing and caring for trees, and shrubs, watering, edging, raking and weeding; basic janitorial maintenance including restroom maintenance and trash clean up.
  • Prior experience operating job-related equipment and hand tools. 
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience which allows the incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of the position may also be considered.

Other Requirements:
  • CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogen Certification within 30 days date of hire.
  • A valid Driver's License at time of hire and a driving record that is acceptable to the City’s insurance requirements. Out of state candidates must obtain their WA State Driver's License within 30 days after moving to WA https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/moving.html    
  • A criminal background check is required following a verbal offer of employment. Criminal history is not an automatic employment disqualifier. Results are reviewed on a case-by case basis.  
  • This is a City-identified non-DOT safety sensitive position and requires a pre-employment drug screening.

  • Frequent grasping and/or using fine finger manipulation to operate tools and equipment. 
  • Frequently performs repetitive sometimes strenuous motions.
  • Occasionally operating a computer keyboard (typing) and other office equipment.
  • Occasionally sitting or otherwise remaining in a stationary position.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving or transporting up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasionally drive/operate a City vehicle.
  • Occasionally ascending/descending ladders.

  • Exposure to herbicides and other flower/plant chemicals and/or fumes.
