Storm Maintenance Worker (pw-i): $6,393.00 - $7,771.50 monthly.
Senior Storm Maintenance Worker (pw-j): $6,713.50 - $8,159.50 monthly.
New hires generally start between $6,393.00 and $7,048.50 per month for a Storm Maintenance Worker and $6,713.50 and $7,400.50 for a Senior Storm Maintenance Worker. Placement within the position’s full wage scale is based on qualifications and professional experience.
About the Position
Storm Maintenance WorkerThis is a regular, full-time position with the City's Storm division. Job duties are focused on the maintenance of the City's Storm water conveyance systems. As an entry level position, the individual will work under the direction of crew leads as well as the senior staff members on the team. Storm division employees work in conjunction with the Street division employees maintaining right of way assets including, but not limited to, maintenance of road surfaces, traffic control devices and markings, vegetation control, snow and ice control, and maintenance of various other Street/Storm assets. About the Department
Edmonds Storm division consists of one manager, one crew lead, and seven crew members that maintain the City's storm division surface water quality assets. The Storm division works in conjunction with the Street division sharing the same manager, equipment, and shop space. These divisions work under the Public Works Department.
About the City
The City of Edmonds is a beautiful community on the Puget Sound waterfront with a population of 43,420 (MRSC, 2024) and is the gateway to the Olympic peninsula via the state ferry system. Edmonds provides a full range of services, including contracted fire services, police services a municipal court, a community pool, a regional performing arts facility, public works and utilities, a regional wastewater treatment facility, along with community events and services through our Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department. Essential Functions - Storm Maintenance Worker
- Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of City streets, alleys, right-of-ways and sidewalks.
- Removes materials; prepares and performs patching of potholes; seals cracks and repairs asphalt surfaces.
- Cleans, maintains and repairs storm drains, culverts, catch basins and manholes; installs storm drains and drainage systems; excavates and installs storm drains manually or with backhoes and trenchers.
- Removes, prepares, forms and pours concrete sidewalks or walkways.
- Controls and maintains vegetation in right-of-ways and intersections and removes debris during and after weather related storms.
- Operates snow plowing equipment to remove snow; applies chemicals and/or sand to control ice.
- Maintains traffic control markings including: roadway striping, crosswalks, installation of signs and other markings according to state laws and City needs; lays out new centerlines and crosswalks.
- Operates a variety of equipment including: loaders, spray equipment, paint striper, dump truck, vactor truck, jack hammer and other specialized equipment and hand and power tools.
- Assists in the maintenance and repair of traffic control devices and right-of-way signs and symbols.
- Maintains accurate routine records of work performed including: equipment usage, preventive maintenance and needed repairs; responds to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.
Essential Functions - Senior Storm Maintenance Worker
- Serves as crew leader on specific projects or specialty assignments overseeing Storm maintenance projects as directed.
- Operates a vactor truck to clean catch basins and storm drain lines; hydro excavates trenches and areas around sensitive gas, power and water lines.
- Installs storm drain catch basins and drain pipes to control excess water run-off, clean creek culverts of leaves, brush and logs to prevent clogging and washing out roadways and to prevent flooding.
- Maintains storm water facilities City-wide and maintains associated records; inspects all storm water facilities within the City limits and updates City storm system maps.
- Creates and inputs storm related work orders; researches easements and right-or-ways; tests drainage outfalls and maintains records of tests.
- Picks up daily storm line locate requests from the main office; reviews requests for scheduling taking into consideration timelines, address location and urgency of request with emergency locates taking priority.
- Verifies or conducts more in depth research via computer if needed in order to ensure proper storm line location.
- Keeps work truck stocked with all required supplies needed for sign maintenance on a regular basis and in accordance to an established schedule.
- Documents and records any questionable signs such as: bent, faded, dirty, leaning, non-readable, or vandalized ones, etc.; remedies these signage problems immediately if possible; enters documentation into computer about the condition of these signs; places orders or requests to the sign shop for any signs that need major repair or replacement; installs the new signage.
- Removes concrete sidewalks; installs concrete forms and pours new finish concrete
- Lays out crosswalks, paints roadway markings including: centerlines, crosswalks and arrows.
- Operates tractor mounted mower/brush cutter to cut grass and brush along city right-of-ways
- Prepares and utilizes materials used to repair streets and alleys; patches utility pavement cuts, potholes and seal cracks; repairs asphalt surfaces
- Performs traffic control and flagging duties when needed.
- Operates snow plowing equipment to remove snow; applies chemicals and/or sand to control ice; maintains routine records of work performed including: equipment usage, preventive maintenance and needed repairs; responds to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma/GED Certificate AND
- Six months of experience is required in construction or related field of work that includes operation of associated equipment and tools, preferably in a municipal or public sector environment OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that will allow the incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
- Experience with concrete, asphalt, and the operation of storm systems is preferred,
Required Licenses and Certifications
- “Class A” CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within one year from date of hire.
- Flagging Certification within 3 years from date of hire.
- CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogen Cards within 2 years of date of hire.
Senior Storm Maintenance Worker
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma/GED Certificate AND
- Four years of journey-level experience in public works construction and equipment operation including operation and maintenance of associated equipment used in storm water and street maintenance and construction work that includes leading and overseeing storm or street maintenance crews on assigned projects OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that will allow the incumbent to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
- Some vacancies may require additional experience in specialty area such as mapping and sign maintenance.
Required Licenses and Certifications
- Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements at time of hire.
- Valid Flagging Certification at time of hire.
- Valid CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogen Cards at time of hire.
Requirements for both Classifications
- A valid Driver's License at time of hire and a driving record that is acceptable to the City’s insurance requirements. Out of state candidates must obtain their WA State Driver's License within 30 days after moving to WA https://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/moving.html
- Other specialty certifications/licenses as required by state and federal law and/or OSHA and WAC regulations may be required within a specified period of time after hire.
- A criminal background check is required following a verbal offer of employment. Criminal history is not an automatic employment disqualifier. Results are reviewed on a case-by case basis.
- This position is subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with USDOT requirements. A pre-employment drug screening will be required upon conditional job offer.
