Job Overview

The Opportunity :

The City of El Cajon is currently searching for a Forensic Evidence Technician to provide forensic services and support within the A2LA accredited Forensic Laboratory at the El Cajon Police Department. In this role, the individual will author official reports, photograph, document, and collect evidence at crime scenes, process evidence for Latent Prints, search latent prints in AFIS, and provide expert courtroom testimony. The ideal candidate will display professionalism, be a problem solver, and have a great attention for detail.

The Recruitment Process :

The most highly qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process which includes a Qualifications Appraisal Interview. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligible list for employment consideration for at least six months. The Qualifications Appraisal Interviews have been tentatively scheduled for March 4, 2025.

Candidates selected for this position will be required to pass a thorough background investigation, including credit check, polygraph, medical examination, and drug screen.

Qualification Guidelines

Education : Completion of two years of study at a recognized college or university with a major or significant course work in evidence technology, criminalistics or a closely related field. An internship in a forensic laboratory is highly desirable.

Experience : At least six months experience in evidence technology or criminalistics or a closely related field.

Special Requirements : Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record.

Additional Information

Standby Time :

For those EMPLOYEES in the Forensic Evidence Technicians assigned standby duties, sixteen (16) hours vacation for each seven-day week to which they are assigned standby duties shall be credited to their vacation balance. If a holiday occurs during the assigned week, four (4) additional hours of vacation will be credited to the EMPLOYEE'S vacation balance.

Include the 1) organization name 2) the organization's accreditation status 3) dates of crime lab or crime scene experience, and 4) work performed- including any courtroom testimony. Have you taken any coursework in the areas of Crime Scene Investigations, Fingerprint Development, Forensic Photography, or Fingerprint Identification?

Do you have experience delivering oral presentations in either an academic or professional setting?

Are you willing to work an on-call basis, irregular hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned?

Are you willing to handle chemicals and biological hazards?
