The City of Elk River is seeking candidates for the position of Street Maintenance Operator. This position is responsible for city street, right-of-way, and storm sewer maintenance and will operate light and heavy equipment and perform manual labor. This is a fulltime, union, 40 hour per week, Monday through Friday, benefits eligible position.
- Hours outside the normal working hours will be required for snowplowing and other emergencies.
- This position is subject to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration drug testing requirements.
- Position open to candidates who have not applied in the past year.

Position Summary
The Street Maintenance Operator performs maintenance operations on city streets, right-of-ways, and storm sewers. Operates light and heavy equipment.
Essential Functions
- Performs street maintenance activities.
- Constructs/maintains streets, parking lots, alleys, and related property using heavy and light equipment.
- Conducts sweeping, plowing, sanding and salting, crack sealing, and asphalt patching operations.
- Installs and maintains storm sewer systems and surface water drains.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs concrete surfaces.
- Installs and maintains street signs.
- Maintains traffic control signage on work projects within the road right-of-way.
- Cuts or trims trees and brush on city property and road right-of-way.
- Performs level 1 and 2 equipment maintenance activities.
- Performs daily lubrication level checks on assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Completes CDL checklist daily on all assigned CDL vehicles.
- Reviews general condition of vehicle exterior and operating systems.
- Replace normal vehicle wear items i.e. windshield wipers, cutting edges, light bulbs.
- Performs general maintenance activities including exterior and interior and grounds maintenance as assigned.
- Performs other essential job duties.
- Regular and timely work attendance including callouts and scheduled work hours.
- Follows all safety procedures.
- Participates in safety training.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to operate heavy and light motorized street maintenance equipment.
- Ability to perform light mechanical maintenance.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse environmental conditions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to participate in on-call rotation and respond timely to callouts and scheduled off-hours work.
- Ability to respond to work very early in the morning.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement or valid driver's license with ability to obtain Class A with Air Brake Endorsement within 6 months of hire date.
- Good driving record.
- Two years of related work experience including operating light and heavy equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Welding experience.
- Class A CDL with Air Brake Endorsement
- Related specialized training beyond high school.
Physical Requirements
Work Schedule
Normal work schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. During day light savings time the hours are 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Hours outside of the normal work schedule will be required for snow plowing and emergencies.
