What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Field Services Technician I position at City of Ennis?
Under general supervision, performs maintenance, operations and field work involved in water distribution, water meters and recording water consumption for utility service customers.
- Accurately reads water meters on assigned routes, normally at curb and alley locations; accurately records readings on a handheld data device; makes necessary calculations.
- Checks to determine conditions of water meters, reports visible meter defects, leaks, and related problems in the form of a trouble code or service order.
- Analyzes work orders and plans daily work schedule.
- Diagnoses meter errors or technical problems and determine the solution.
- Manages on site installations and repairs of meters.
- Installs and removes Fire Hydrant Meters.
- Checks meters that should be off; reports any illegal use of water.
- Demonstrates knowledge of geography, street locations, and meter locations within the City.
- Performs installation, maintenance and repairs on water meters, meter boxes, fire hydrants, water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems as directed by supervisor.
- Interacts courteously and professionally with utility customers and public in the performance of job duties.
- Removes vegetation, cleans meters and meters vaults and replaces meters.
- Performs routine maintenance and repair on pump stations and generators. Shovels, rakes and spreads dirt, sand, gravel, asphalt and other materials.
- Has frequent contact with employees, citizens and other city departments.
- Ability to maintain a regular and reliable level of attendance including arriving to work on time.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Principles and practices of water and wastewater systems.
- Proper methods and techniques used in cleaning, repairing, and maintaining water systems equipment.
- Geography, street locations and meter locations.
- Common hand and power tools.
- Equipment, methods, and techniques appropriate to department assignment
- Obtaining and maintaining certification as a water and/or wastewater operator.
- Utilizing public relations techniques in responding to inquiries and complaints.
- Following oral and written instructions.

- TCEQ standards and policies for Water/Wastewater systems.
- The basic techniques, equipment and materials used in the construction, maintenance and repair of water distribution systems.
- Water distribution operation, including piping, sources of supply, water quality, disinfection, water-related electricity, and the operational principles of pumps and motors.
- Installing, repairing, and maintaining of water systems equipment.
- Using handheld data devices and interface with billing/accounting systems.
- Coordinating with public offices for scheduling and operation of water utility services.
- Safely operates a motor vehicle
High school graduate or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in water utility services.
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Obtain Texas Class C Water Distribution License within two (2) years; and obtain a Texas Class B Driver’s License within one (1) year and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.
