Job Characteristics
The City of Eustis is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under general direction, performs responsible work involving the prevention and suppression of fires. The employee is responsible for responding to emergency situations and assisting in the control and resolution of the situation.
The employee works within the scope of established Fire Department rules, regulations and procedures; however, is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative, in emergency situations.
- Starting base salary is $45,083.03 annually, based upon 2756 hours. Candidates should expect to work a minimum a schedule of 2912 hours, for a total starting salary range of $47,634.79 - $48,910.83 dependent upon FLSA overtime requirements met.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills :
Knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures; knowledge of the streets, roads and geography of the city; knowledge of first-aid principles and procedures; knowledge of the operation and maintenance of various types of firefighting apparatus.
Ability to carry out assignments with minimal instructions; Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and the general public; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions; ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays; ability to work on-call, as required, including nights, weekends and holidays
Skill in the operation and maintenance of fire equipment and apparatus.
Minimum Qualifications :
High School Diploma or recognized equivalent; Florida State Firefighters Minimum Standards Certificate or Certificate of Compliance; Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification; preferred State Certified Paramedic; Valid Florida Class E Driver's License with an acceptable driving record is required.

Note : Minimum Qualification Certificates are required to be maintained to continue employment.
Working Hours :
Rotating (every third day) twenty-four (24) hour shifts from 7 : 00 a.m. to 7 : 00 a.m.

Physical Demands :
Moderately heavy work for a considerable part of working time. Requires walking & standing; lifting 50 pounds; running, jumping / leaping, climbing, stooping, reaching, bending, carrying / pushing / pulling 125 pounds; good finger / hand dexterity and hand / eye coordination; good eyesight (20 / 40 corrected binocular vision; no worse than 20 / 100 uncorrected binocular vision), hearing and speech; regular driving and operation of assigned equipment.
Employee must be physically able to work in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) for long periods, hazardous conditions and close / confined spaces; Must be able to wear protective clothing and equipment up to 60 pounds and work in extremely high temperatures and toxic atmospheres.

Group Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance :
The City Provides $20,000 group life insurance and $20,000 accidental death benefits for Firefighters. The City provides $50,000 group life and $50,000 accidental death benefits for the Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief. Employees may purchase supplemental policies through payroll deduction.
Eustis Fire Pension Fund :
The Fire Pension Fund offers retirement benefits, disability and beneficiary benefits. Officers and the City contribute and amount as stipulated by the fund.
Empower 457 deferred compensation plan and 457 Roth options are also available.
Annual Leave :
Fire shift employees accrue annual leave at the rate of 11.2 hours for each month worked in a year. Seven years and over, accrue additional hours to a maximum of 263.88 hours per year.
Sick Leave :
Fire shift employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 11.2 hours per month, not to exceed 134.4 hours per year.
Merit Plan :
Yearly merit increases, when funded, based on Performance Evaluation Score.
Funeral Leave :
Provides for up to 3 days in state and 5 days out of state, upon approval.
Holiday Pay :
Eighty (80) hours paid time off (after probationary period) credited annually. Full time employees (except Directors, Deputy Directors, Captains or equivalent positions), who are required to work on an approved holiday, receive pay at one and one half (1.5) times their regular hourly rate for time worked on that holiday.
