    SALARY RANGE: $31.36-$40.16 /hour
    *Starting salary is dependent on qualifications, but in most cases is no higher than the midpoint for the range.
    Full-time 37.5 hours per week, including evening, weekends, and holiday hours.

    NATURE OF WORK:

    The Evanston Public Library is seeking a full-time Librarian. The ideal candidate will be innovative, tech-savvy, creative, dedicated to excellent customer service, team-oriented, and passionate about working with all community members. This position engages with our diverse population to provide reference and reader’s advisory services to Library patrons and plan and deliver equitable, innovative programming for all ages and across generations in the community.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

    • Provides high quality customer service at one or more of the library’s public service desks.
    • Carefully interviews customers to determine desired information and provides clear, accurate, and timely answers to all customer inquiries.
    • Conducts informational searches using all available resources, including subscription online resources, the Internet, books, and periodicals.
    • Guides customers to library resources in order to locate specific materials. Assists and instructs customers in the use of library resources.
    • Maintains current knowledge of the Library’s collections and electronic resources.
    • Plans, promotes, and presents innovative and effective programming in a variety of formats, such as facilitated discussions, hands-on workshops, panel discussions, and expert speaker presentations.
    • Develops partnerships with and serves as the point person to local organizations, businesses and constituencies to improve and promote library services throughout the community.
    • Gives presentations on library services and resources to outside groups.
    • May train and supervise volunteers, paraprofessionals, and professional staff, and lead projects.
    • May assist in the selection of materials to be added to assigned areas of the collection.
    • May serve as a senior staff member in charge of the building (Librarian-in-Charge).
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    FOR LIFELONG LEARNING AND LITERACY:

    • Assists library users, primarily adults, with the use of library materials, services, equipment, and facilities, including help in accessing online resources and downloading library media.
    • Assists with ongoing reader’s advisory programming and outreach, including book discussions, Community Reads, Summer Reading, and Books on Wheels.
    • Assists with promotion of the collections and services by developing displays, book lists, writing reviews and articles for the library website, social media and blogs.
    • Maintains broad general knowledge of Evanston Public Library resources and programs with a special concentration in adult services resources, of modern library practices, and literature, technology, and popular culture.
    • Maintains a broad general knowledge of the Evanston community and provides referrals to community organizations and resources.
    • Designs, promotes, and delivers impactful programming in various formats related to civic engagement, small business, careers & finance, health & wellness, adult literacy & learning, legal topics or other topics of interest to the community.

    FOR TEEN SERVICES:

    • Plans, presents, and evaluates innovative hands-on programming with an emphasis on teens (grades 6-12), parents, caregivers, and educators. Programming can relate to STEM, the arts, literature, making, and more.
    • Assists library users, primarily teens, with the use of library materials, services, equipment, and facilities, including help in accessing online resources and downloading library media.
    • May assist with school and community outreach/engagement for teens.
    • Creates promotional materials for teen programs.
    • Maintains current knowledge of the Library’s teen and adult collections and electronic resources, keeping abreast of industry trends and innovations. Reads, listens to, and views a wide variety of teen literature and media.
    • Develops and maintains recommended book lists and resource guides for teens.

    FOR INNOVATION & DIGITAL LEARNING:

    • Develops and evaluates curriculum for technology training.
    • Provide instruction on technology for adults for use of computers, 3D printers, maker technology, digital design, and other equipment.
    • Provides project management in support of online services.
    • Considerable knowledge of literature and authors, graphic novels, films, music, and games.
    • Must be fluent with social media.
    • Experience and interest in any of the following areas: music and video creation and editing, graphic design, computer animation, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) related activities (robotics, computer programming, 3-D printing, etc.), public speaking, and creative writing desired.
    • Evaluates and recommends services and products that enhance the online user experience
    • Aids staff and patrons with troubleshooting a variety of software, emerging technologies, and devices, including public computers, printers, copiers, and meeting and community room technology.

    FOR EARLY LEARNING AND LITERACY:

    • Assists library users, with an emphasis on children (ages 0 to 12), with the use of library materials, services, equipment and facilities, including help in accessing online resources and downloading library media.
    • Prepares and presents innovative library programs for children and families to include book talks, storytelling, performances, workshops and presentations.
    • Maintains current knowledge of the Library's Youth Services collections and electronic resources, keeping abreast of industry trends and innovations. Reads, listens to, and views a wide variety of children's literature and media.
    • Leads tours and provides an orientation for resources and services for school groups, camps and other community organizations.

    FOR ENGAGEMENT SERVICES:

    • Builds upon existing partnerships and relationships with the community in Evanston and community-based organizations; seeks opportunities to create new partnerships in order to identify and meet the library and information needs of residents throughout the City of Evanston.
    • Attends community meetings and programs pertinent to the Evanston community to represent the Library and library services. Communicates to library departments the needs and interests of residents, and ensures their needs are addressed in library policies, services and collections.
    • Organizes, promotes, presents and evaluates public programs within the Evanston Public Library locations and outside the library throughout the City of Evanston.
    • Promotes library print and digital collections and services to a racially and socioeconomically diverse urban/suburban community. May assist in creating flyers and posters, bibliographies, pathfinders, social media posts, (e.g., Twitter or Facebook), blog entries, and reviews. Gives presentations on library services throughout the community.
    • Provides “pop-up” mobile library services, which includes visiting Evanston parks, community centers, community events, schools, and other places where people naturally gather throughout the community.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

    Must possess a master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited college or university and must possess two (2) or more years of public service work experience in a library.

    Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:

    • Ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds and establish and maintain relationships with library patrons who may need assistance or support.
    • Fluency in using online library resources.
    • Considerable experience in library instruction and library program presentation.
    • Considerable knowledge of online searching, Microsoft Office, online computer catalogs, the Windows operating system, and Google Drive, Calendar, and Sheets.
    • Considerable knowledge of a wide range of literary genres and authors.
    • Communicate effectively, comfortably and intelligibly in public.
    • Experience in teaching, tutoring, tech assistance, and/or instructional design is highly desirable.
    • Apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form, while dealing with several abstract and concrete variables.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure to perform the four operations with like or common decimal fractions; to compute ratio rate, and percent and measures; to perform arithmetic operations involving all American monetary units.
    • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a diverse group of customers and staff throughout the Library, as well as outside the organization.
    • Multi-tasks many variable duties, requests and responsibilities.
    • Read, understand and interpret manuals, policies and procedures, rules, regulations, journals, newspapers, memos, letters, reports and legal documents.
    • Prepare business letters, expositions, summaries, and reports, using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
    • Spanish language fluency is highly desirable.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

    The ability to work in a primarily sedentary position, with the ability to occasionally use force to exert up to 40 pounds. The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc. using up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

    The employee is subject to inside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from indoor temperature changes.

    There are no environmental hazards associated with this classification.


    SUPERVISION:

    Work is performed under the guidance of the department manager. The individual has contact with other Library institutions and staff at all levels, and uses the necessary resources to meet and achieve goals and/or objectives. Work is assigned through specific projects and customer/clientele requests. The employee is responsible for prioritizing work tasks, and for identifying and utilizing the appropriate resources to resolve a problem or situation and/or research and analyze specific requests. Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences and meetings. Guidance is provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned. Work is evaluated at least annually, with respect to customer service, problem-solving ability and performance in accordance with this classification standard.
