What are the responsibilities and job description for the Range Master position at City of Fairfax?
The City of Fairfax Police Department is looking for a temporary contract person to fill the position of Range Master. The Range Master is assigned to the Professional Standards Division and reports directly to the Professional Standards Division Training Lieutenant. The Range Master oversees daily onsite operations of the Firearms Training Facility and ensures continuity of operations at the facility.
Oversees the operation of the Firearms Training Facility and prepares monthly reports containing documented training, supply arrivals, and needs. Maintains proper record keeping, inventorying, and ordering of supplies, to include ammunition, targets, weapons supplies, and other range items. Ensures paperwork (score sheets/sign-in sheets/range safety rules) are done correctly and in CALEA compliance and turned in to the Training Lieutenant promptly. Oversees the issuance of firearms to new employees authorized to carry weapons.
Ensures adequate instructors are available during range activities in order to maintain a safe environment and provide a sufficient level of instruction to individual shooters. Assists firearms instructors with classroom lecture and range activities. Assigns instructor roles for training dates and schedules instructor meetings prior to scheduled training activities to review training content. Identifies classes throughout the year to improve individual instructor and officer firearms proficiency.

Graduation from high school, plus three years of related experience.
Must have successfully completed the DCJS General Instructor course and the Firearms Instructor course that was obtained through a DCJS certified police academy. All certifications must be current and remain up to date.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of DCJS firearm qualification procedures and is able to create, review and submit lesson plans for DCJS approval. Must be aware of the latest trends related to weapons systems and firearms training.
Additional Desirable Qualification:
Armorer for department issued weapons (Should obtain credentials within 12 months of selection).
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation and polygraph exam is required.
Hours: Monday – Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Position is considered Temporary and will not be able to work more than twelve months consecutively.
Permitted to work up to 1559 hours in a fiscal year.
