Minimum Requirements:
- 5 years of Criminal Justice Experience
- Certified DCJS General and Firearms Instructor
- Criminal Justice Academy Firearms Instructor
- Bachelor’s Degree (Experience may substitute for degree)
Preferred:
- Criminal Justice Agency Supervisor
- Criminal Justice Agency Range Master
- Criminal Justice Academy Lead Firearms Instructor
- Certified Trauma First Aid
Highly Qualified:
- Criminal Justice Agency Mid-Level Supervisor
- Advanced Firearms Instructor/Armorer Certifications
- Range Master of Indoor Firearms Range
General Description of Duties:
Manage the Firearms Training Center and oversee all aspects of firearm training and instruction.
Major Job Functions:
The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.
- Schedule, plan, and instruct (as required) basic, in-service, and instructor firearms classes in accordance with Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) and Academy guidelines.
- Schedule and maintain a list of active firearms instructors for academy basic, in-service, and instructor schools.
- Prioritize and schedule all requests for range use.
- Act as the Safety Officer for academy, member agencies, non-member agencies, and non-governmental organizations use of the Firearms Training Center.
- Maintain the operational readiness of the Firearms Training Center including cleanliness, lead mitigation, and inventory management.
- Prepare or collect, review, and maintain student files in accordance with DCJS and Academy guidelines.
- Maintain non-member agency and non-governmental organization paperwork to include facility use agreements, liability waivers, proof of liability insurance (as applicable), and participant signed firearms safety check sheets.
- Set up and maintain classrooms/ranges, brief classes, maintain records of student attendance, and reproduce or create handouts and training aids as needed.
- Maintain professional, cordial relations with other staff members, students, visiting instructors, Sheriff’s, Chiefs, and other organizational heads.
- Occasional work outside of normal academy operating hours (evenings, Fridays, weekends).
- Assist or substitute for any other Academy staff member as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
- Excellent communication skills and able to interact with diverse staff and stakeholders
- Proficient in the operation of firearms standardly found in law enforcement agencies
- Familiar with adult learning concepts to instruct novice and advanced students in the use of firearms
- Knowledgeable of OSHA standards relating to indoor range hazards
- Exceptional conflict resolution skills
- Strong organizational abilities
- Proficient with Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher
- Able to succinctly express complex issues both orally and in writing
- Must be able to occasionally lift 50 pounds or less
