The City of Fairfax is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Transit Fleet Technician II to join our team. This position involves performing a wide range of maintenance, mechanical repair, and fabrication tasks on transit diesel-powered buses, medium and heavy-duty fleet vehicles, and specialized equipment. The role requires a proactive, safety-conscious, and technically proficient individual ready to work on a variety of transit and specialized vehicles in a dynamic environment.
Perform preventive maintenance, diagnose issues, and repair transit buses and medium/heavy-duty fleet vehicles and equipment.
Conduct automotive repairs in an open bay environment with variable temperatures and conditions.
Overhaul key components such as transmissions, clutch assemblies, power take-offs, and hydraulic systems.
Use diagnostic computers, scan tools, and specialized equipment to troubleshoot and repair systems.
Assist in determining equipment specifications for new vehicles and equipment.
Perform both intermediate level welding tasks, fabrication, and seasonal maintenance, including snow removal and leaf collection.
Operate and maintain a variety of shop equipment, such as saws, drills, grinders, and presses.
Conduct official state inspections of licensed city vehicles.
Participate in after-hours On-Call Rotation and respond to emergencies as needed.
Maintain a clean and organized work bay and follow OSHA safety compliance.

High school diploma (or GED) supplemented by automotive mechanics courses and manufacturer-specific training.
Three to five years of experience in vehicular maintenance or equivalent training and experience.
Must meet Skill Base Pay requirements for Fleet Technician II.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of transit bus and medium/heavy-duty vehicle repair methods, materials, tools, and techniques.
Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot defects in vehicles and equipment.
Ability to interpret and follow service manuals and standard operating procedures.
Proficiency with various diagnostic tools and software.
Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others.
Adaptability to new technologies and ability to be a proactive self-starter.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Must obtain a valid Class A commercial driver's license with N, P, and air brakes endorsements within six months of employment, with a good driving record.
Certifications required within 12 months of employment:
- Virginia State Vehicle Inspector
- ASE Certification in Air Conditioning 609
- ASE Certification in Transit Brakes
- Four additional ASE Certifications as assigned by Fleet Services Superintendent
- ASE xEV Level 1 Certification
Must furnish a complete set of personal hand tools.
Monday through Friday, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm (subject to change) to 6:00 am – 4:30 pmSelected candidates with an active CDL will receive a $2,000 bonus upon hire. (Paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year).
Selected candidates with an active CDL learner’s permit will receive a $1,000 bonus upon hire. (Paid per pay period, 26 pay periods per year).
Selected candidates without a CDL will be hired as an Underfill, CDL Training classes provided and paid for by the City.
Non-competitive promotion potential to Fleet Tech II and Fleet Tech III upon completion of requirements under skill-based pay system.
