WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR

1. POSITION TITLE: Water Treatment Plant Operator

2. DEPARTMENT: Utilities/Water Treatment and Pumping

3. PAY GRADE: 175 (Nonexempt)

4. SALARY: $44,252.00

5. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK OF THE POSITION:

Operation of all process equipment used in the water treatment plant. Determines treatment process condition using laboratory data and meter and gauge readings. Recognizes and corrects process upsets or critical conditions in the unit processes. Maintains proper production flows in treatment process and in the system. Advises supervisor of any known issues. Performs janitorial duties in the plant. Laboratory responsibilities include sampling/analysis, recording of data, daily, monthly, quarterly annual compliance reports, and other related duties as required by the supervisor.

6. DUTIES OF THE POSITION (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

Operates plant equipment including meters, pumps, valves, generators; monitors gauges, control panels and other related equipment; operates computer and interprets data; works with chemicals required in treatment process; collects samples; performs laboratory analysis; pack and adjust packing on pumps and valves; perform minor plumbing tasks and treatment process maintenance and assists water treatment plant electrician; maintains shift logs and meter readings; cleans process area regularly, tools; equipment; floors; walls; and furniture as necessary; removes snow and ice and 0mows grass as required; performs other related duties as required; works rotating shifts or 8 hour shift: required to work overtime hours as necessary , carry a pager or cell phone, and operates vehicles. Performs required analytical testing for laboratory including but not limited to bacteriological and potable water.

7. DESCRIPTION OF SUPERVISION RECEIVED BY AN INCUMBENT OF THIS POSITION:

The incumbent of this position is supervised by the Water Pumping and Treatment Supervisor and/or their designee.

8. DESCRIPTION OF SUPERVISION EXERCISED BY AN INCUMBENT OF THIS POSITION:

No supervisory authority is granted.

9. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR PERFORMANCE OF THE WORK:

Mechanical, electrical, and mathematical skills are required; knowledge of principles and procedures of water treatment and pumping facilities; knowledge of safety rules and occupational hazards; ability to work with other employees and abide by instructions from supervisors; ability to work with a minimum of supervision; ability to work alone for periods of time; ability to comprehend methods and procedures relative to hydraulics and good physical condition. Must possess good computer skills, record keeping ability, communications skills and record/process customer telephone calls. Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, is also acceptable.

10. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE NECESSARY FOR WORK PREPARATION:

Certification or experience in a water treatment facility preferred; high school diploma or GED required. A bachelor’s degree in biology/chemistry is preferred. Must possess a valid State of West Virginia Driver’s License.

Incumbents of this position shall obtain a Class I Water Treatment Operator Certification within one year from the date of hire. Incumbents of this position shall also obtain Class II (within 2 years from date of hire), Class III (within 5 years from date of hire), and Class IV (within 7 years from date of hire) Water Treatment Operator Certifications, which is within the timeframe as established by the West Virginia Bureau of Public Health Rules.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to walk, sit, stand, bend, climb stairs, walk on uneven surfaces, crouch, crawl, kneel and stoop. Additionally, the employee will be required, at times, to lift, carry or push/pull supplies, materials, equipment and/or items weighing up to 50 pounds while performing the duties of this position. Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. Incumbents of this position will work in various weather conditions with possible exposure to noise, odors, fumes, dust, toxic conditions and risk of bodily injury.
