Officers that are Nebraska certified are offered a hiring incentive of $10,000.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under direction of Police Chief, Assistant Police Chief or Police Sergeant or general direction of City Administration, Patrols an assigned area in the enforcement of law and order. Takes special assignments in the protection of life and property.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates an automobile in patrolling and assigned area for the prevention of crime and the enforcement of traffic laws and regulations.
- Responds to radio and telephone dispatches and appears at scenes of disorder or crime.
- Notes and reports traffic hazards.
- Assists in controlling traffic at scenes of emergencies.
- Investigates and prepares reports on accidents, offenses and damages to property.
- Gives directions and information.
- Makes arrests, issues citations, gives verbal warnings.
- Prepares reports on arrests and property impounded.
- Directs traffic.
- Tries doors to determine that buildings are locked.
- Inspects establishments providing alcoholic beverages and entertainment.
- Intervenes in private ( domestic violence) or public disputes to protect public and maintain order.
- Request medical attention when necessary.
- Appears in court as arresting officer
- Fingerprints prisoners.
- Assists in the investigation of crimes involving adults or juveniles.
- Investigates complaints.
- Submits criminal information to the criminal investigator.
- Interrogates persons whose actions are suspicious.
- Removes objects from the streets which might endanger traffic.
- Issues citations for parking violations.
- Participates in training conferences and programs.
- Writes a log of activities and case reports.
- Works to maintain good public relations
- Exercises physical control of citizens when required.
- Must be prepared to discharge firearms when conditions warrant.
- Performs related work as required.
- Interacts with the public, other employees, and supervisors in a polite, calm and professional manner.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have high school graduate or GED.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- No serious misdemeanors or felony convictions.
- Testing will include the physical fitness test as required by NLETC, oral interview, psychological interview and extensive background check.
- Ability to read and understand departmental policies, rules and instructions, law regulations and police literature together with an aptitude of law enforcement work.
- Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick effective and reasonable course of action giving due regard to the surrounding hazards and circumstances of each situation.
- Write clear and accurate reports.
- Physical strength.
- Keen observation and ability to remember names, faces and details of incidents.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Learn the use and care of automobiles and firearms.
- Communicate effectively with co-workers, trainees, the public and all supervisory personnel.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of training and experience that will allow the incumbent to acquire the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the required tasks.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work performed by this position is performed both indoors and outdoors; thus, inclement weather may be encountered on the job. This position may come into contact with violent individuals; hence the work may be dangerous. Working hours are 84 hours per pay period: however response to emergency situation and other call back duties may be frequently encountered. Must have a current Nebraska driver's license.
