Primary Accountabilities:
The Police Officer is responsible providing citizen assistance, enforcing all federal, state, and local laws, performing patrol duties, making arrests, issuing traffic violations, and investigating crimes and accidents.
Major Duties:
· Enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
· Protects the life, property, and welfare of the citizens of Clay Center.
· Makes arrests and issues traffic citations.
· Performs routine patrol duties and prepares reports and files.
· Investigates crimes and accidents.
· Gathers evidence.
· Provides citizen assistance.
· Assists ambulance and fire crews as needed.
· Responds to emergency situations and performs CPR or First Aid.
· Operates law enforcement equipment including patrol vehicles, firearms, and communications equipment.
· Interviews witnesses, suspects, and victims.
· Maintains department equipment.
· Serves warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents.
· Performs traffic control duties.
· Follows department policies and procedures.
· Follows safety procedures and practices.
· Assists other law enforcement agencies as needed.
· Assists other non-law enforcement agencies as needed.
· Performs the duties of the DARE Officer.
· Testifies in court.
· Performs civil process duties.
· Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
Required Qualifications:
No Brady or Giglio issues.
· No felony or domestic battery convictions.
· High school diploma or GED and graduation from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, forty (40) hours of continuing educational annually, Radar Certification, CPR Certification and First Aid Certification.
· Must possess a valid driver’s license.
· Must possess thorough knowledge of all federal, state and local laws and ordinances.
· Must possess knowledge of law enforcement techniques and law enforcement supervision.
· Must possess the ability to efficiently operate firearms.
· Must possess the ability to complete and check reports and develop department policies and procedures.
· Must possess the ability to read and interpret manuals, legal documents, and written instructions.
· Must possess working knowledge of mathematics.
· Must possess the ability to deal tactfully, courteously and firmly with the public; communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
· Must possess the ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with citizens, co-workers and others.
· Must possess the ability to pay close attention to detail and to make reliable and prompt decisions using available information.
· Must demonstrate good work habits, maintain a professional appearance and attitude and follow policies and procedures.
· Must project a friendly, courteous, patient and professional image at all times, even under adverse conditions.
· Must demonstrate poise, tact and diplomacy with the ability to handle sensitive and confidential information and situations.
Physical Demands:
· Must possess the ability to pass and maintain all physical activities and requirements of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center.
· Kneeling and crouching.
· Is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear.
· Is occasionally required to use hand to finger, handle or operate objects, controls or tools listed above; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or run; and taste and smell.
· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to focus.
Work Environment:
- Combination of office environment and field environment working outdoors.
- Adverse working conditions: exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood borne pathogens, explosives, heights, excessive noise, and adverse weather.
