JOB DUTIES

The Museum Director will strategically lead the City of Farmington's museum system in accordance with our mission of providing diverse stories for our surrounding communities to inspire visitors to learn, engage, and explore.

The museum system includes four active facilities that house small museum stores, the Farmington Museum & Visitor Center, E3 Children's Museum & Science Center, the Museum of Navajo Art & Culture, and Riverside Nature Center. It also includes the Harvest Grove Orchard and Barn and three historic properties. Many of our spaces are available for rent and host many community events.

The visitor center portion of the operations is driven by Visit Farmington, the local destination marketing organization, housed with us at the Farmington Museum. We are currently collaborating with them on a permanent exhibition exploring the geography, natural history, and cultural history of Farmington.

The museum system is supported by two non-profits the Farmington Museum Foundation and the Friends of the Nature Center.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Works under the direction of the Director of Cultural Affairs.

Works with other divisions within the Department of Cultural Affairs and city leadership to carry out sustainable strategic direction. Responsible for transforming ideas and strategic plans into action-driven solutions and initiatives to increase the museum's visibility and relevance in the community and region.

Upholds ethical museum and public service standards.

Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the museum establishing strong partnerships in the community. Enhances the museum system's public image to expand interest and support.

Responsible for the overall management and administrative functions associated with multiple facilities, interpretive trails, educational programs, exhibitions, collections management, museum stores, event rentals, outreach activities, and partnership with Visit Farmington. Proactively stay up-to-date on industry trends.

Represents the museum to the city council, commissions, boards, and various community groups including the Totah Festival Foundation. Using excellent customer service skills establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, the two support foundations, and members of the general public. Actively works to identify and build strong relationships with the diverse communities we serve to strengthen their voices and thoughtfully respond to their needs.

Leads and empowers museum staff to ensure the care of the collections and facilities and to produce high-quality educational programming, interpretation, and in-house exhibitions. Facilitates the personnel management of the museum staff within the administrative regulations of the City of Farmington. Hires, trains, promotes, motivates, counsels, disciplines, and evaluates staff performance.

Identify areas of need and seek volunteer resources, educational resources, and professional development opportunities for staff.

Ensures fiscal accountability for the museum system including budgeting, controlling expenditures, and following all policies and procedures for the City of Farmington and State of New Mexico procurement code and financial management.

Works closely with the Farmington Museum Foundation and Friends of the Nature Center boards to the benefit of the museum system including fund-raising, volunteer recognition, membership benefits, special events, and input for exhibition/collection/program development.

Coordinates with the city marketing personnel to guide the marketing and advertising efforts of the museum system.

Performs all other duties of the museum system in absence of staff, volunteers, and docents.

Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing and extensive background checks required.

Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record for the past three years or state of current residency.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Museum Science or another relevant field, and seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in museum management, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Comprehensive knowledge of modern museum administration principles and practices and museum operations including collections management, interpretation, curation, exhibition design, and educational programming.

Experience working with municipal or government organizations and non-profit boards.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of management, work organization, and supervision including budgeting principles, revenue, expenditures, and cost analysis for division operations. Experience developing and implementing strategic plans.

Leadership and motivational skills, time management skills, and the ability to prioritize and execute simultaneous tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to deal with all types of emergencies that may arise within the facilities. Ability to supervise employees and coordinate crews.

Skill in public relations with individuals and groups on a wide variety of topics in a wide variety of settings. Ability to represent and communicate divisional issues to elected officials, advisory committees, and the public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the city manager, subordinate supervisors, employees, volunteers, other departments, and the general public.

Professional level interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

Ability to operate tools and equipment listed.

Available to perform shift work in a rotation of days, evenings, and nights including weekends and holidays if the need arises.

Experience in grant writing and grant administration preferred.

This position has the responsibility to participate in and comply with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety program.
