What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Instructor II-Temp position at City of Flagstaff?
Employees of this class lead and/or monitor fitness activities at an assigned recreation facility or program. These positions are under the direct supervision of higher-level recreation staff.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Leads participants in a variety of fitness activities in indoor/outdoor recreation settings, including, but not limited to, Aquatics, Cardio, Cycling, Dance, Mind Body, Step, Strength, and Active Aging, etc.
- Distributes recreation equipment and supplies.
- Responsible for program preparation and clean up.
- Answers patron questions.
- Enforces facility and program rules.
- May work with youth, teen, adult and/or senior populations.
- May include basic custodial duties and contact with household chemicals.
- Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Current Certification or 2 years’ experience within specific program or equivalent education.
- Current First Aid and CPR certificates.
- Any combination of experience and training indicating the ability to successfully fulfill the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- Training or experience pertaining to the assigned recreation emphasis area and/or participant group.
- Two years’ experience within specific program.
- Group leadership experience.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Ability and willingness to work flexible schedules, split shifts, evenings, and weekends as needed to facilitate public recreation programs.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.
- Pre-employment background investigation required for positions working with youth and/or vulnerable populations.
- Minimum of two professional references.

- Ability to promote the goals and objectives of assigned program within the scope of assigned duties.
- Skill in leading groups of all sizes, ages, and abilities in one or more fitness activity.
- Skill in coaching and developing others through identifying their developmental needs and assisting them to improve their knowledge and skills.
- General knowledge of a wide variety of fitness programs like Aquatics, Cardio, Cycling, Dance, Mind Body, Step, Strength, and Active Aging.
- Ability to work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and patrons.
- Ability to administer basic first aid and CPR.
- Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude.
- Ability to arrive on time for class.
