What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Navigator position at City of Flint?
The City of Flint is seeking a Public Health Navigator to assist individuals, families and organizations in accessing and navigating available resources to address environmental health, the social and economic determinants of health and emerging public health threats. This grant-funded position works closely with residents and community partners, requires 40 hours per week commitment, including some weekends and evenings
Identifies Flint-area families who qualify for economic, housing, healthcare or other assistance.
Identifies gaps in services and advocates for improvement.
Builds community cohesion by participating in, assisting in the planning of, and promoting positive community events and opportunities.
Assists families in enrolling and maintaining enrollment in medical and social service programs.
Provides input into data collection tools and systems to promote maximum inclusion.
Attends community meetings, outreach and networking events to gather and share information, representing the City of Flint’s Office of Public Health with professionalism while adhering to their core values.
Assists the Water Department with collecting samples, in compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule, and responds to abnormal results with education and resources.
Assists Office of Public Health staff, Chief Resilience Officer and other City of Flint Administration staff in planning and implementing city-wide programs and events pertaining to public health.
Adheres to all government, grant and internal reporting requirements.
Participates in professional development activities related to public health core competencies.
Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Competent in Microsoft Office computer applications (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
- Valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality and cultural competency/humility.
- Ability to work well individually and on a team.
- Must be passionate, motivated and a self-starter.
- Must complete Public Health Navigator onboarding trainings within six months of starting position.
High School Diploma or GED required, Associate’s degree in Social Work, Human Services or related field preferred. Extensive knowledge of the Flint Community. Preferred City of Flint residents.
Applicants fluent in American Sign Language, Arabic and/or Spanish preferred.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit. The employee will be expected to communicate, receive, process and share information. The employee is occasionally required to move within City Hall and other locations within the City of Flint and surrounding areas; use hands to operate technical equipment and/or instruct others with the use of models or other manipulatives. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Local travel required. Occasional in and out of state travel possible. Accommodations for people with disabilities can be provided.
