What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Signal Technician position at City of Flint?
Work includes the installation, maintenance and repairs of all electrical wiring, apparatus, traffic control systems, fixtures, motors, industrial instruments, and other equipment under the jurisdiction of the City of Flint; maintaining the operation of the traffic signal controllers according to the timing permit; perform other related work as required.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Installs, replaces, and repairs, the traffic signals, pedestrian signals, case signs, conduits, cabinets, controllers, and cables associated with the traffic control systems in accordance with the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Ability to identify problems with the traffic control devices and diagnose what actions are required to fix the problem.
- Program and test, traffic timing plans in the controllers before putting them at an intersection and make changes, when necessary, in the field.
- Clean and maintain control cabinets, traffic signals, and pedestrian signals.
- Will have to perform a large portion of the work from an aerial bucket truck.
- Operates a jackhammer, concrete saw, rotary drill and various other power tools along with a variety of common hand tools.
- Loading and unloading trucks with materials and tools needed to complete the assigned job; cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment.
- Maintains stock of electrical fittings, wire, cable, conduit and instruments.
- Sets out barricades and safety cones as instructed by the supervisor.
- Provide a written record of each job performed, with time, date, locations, and list of materials used, which will be placed in the permanent record for the location for legal purposes.
- Will be required to be on standby to answer service calls on a 24-hour basis, on a rotational schedule.
- Keep necessary records of service and repairs of assigned equipment.
- Performs other various duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in traffic maintenance and/or construction or the equivalent in a related field.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License.
- Skilled in performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what type of maintenance is needed.
- Knowledge of safety procedures when working in and around traffic.
- Knowledge of basic operation of various tools and equipment such as hand tools, power tools, and hydraulic tools commonly used in fabrication and maintenance.
- Ability to meet the physical, mental and visual standards of the job.
- Ability and willingness to work in a manner that will not needlessly endanger the safety of one’s self, co-workers, other persons, and equipment.
- Ability to coordinate assignments and work with other trades.
- Ability to read diagrams, blueprints, and hand-drawn sketches.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain a variety of work-related records.
