The City of Folsom is currently recruiting for multiple Library Technicians (Temporary, Part-Time) to join the Folsom Public Library.
Under the general direction of a Librarian, the Library Technician (Temporary, Part-Time) will perform a variety of activities such as patron assistance, programming, and outreach; perform a variety of paraprofessional support duties related to the functions and programs of the libraries.
Schedule
- This is an on-call, temporary position. The specific work schedule(s) are typically flexibly scheduled as needed, generally less than 20 hours per week.
- Candidates must be able to work weekends and evenings.
- Schedule will fall within a Tuesday - Saturday workweek.
- Duration: position is ongoing as long as needed and supported by the budget.
Pay & Benefits
- Non-exempt, hourly rate.
- Part-time positions are hourly and not eligible for benefits, and are limited to working 999 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). No full-time regular appointment will be made from this class.
Note: Unfortunately current active CalPERS members are ineligible for employment with temporary, part-time positions.

- Provide patrons with information about library resources, materials, and services.
- Conduct special programs such as story hours or reading programs.
- Perform community outreach programs.
- Conduct and oversee inventories of books and other library materials.
- Conduct bibliographic searches using a library computer system.
- Interpret library policy under the direction of a Librarian.
- Collect fines and fees; assist patrons in locating library materials and using library resources.
- Check out and check in library materials to patrons.
- Register patrons, establish eligibility status, and input information into database.
- Participate in the preparation and maintenance of displays and exhibits.
- Give group tours to children, parents, and organizations.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of customer service.
- Reference methods, techniques, and sources.
- Principles and practices of program and service delivery for children, teens, and adults.
- Public library procedures including cataloging, bibliographic search procedures, and the use of reference sources and materials.
- The use of technology related to computer and device hardware, software, and online applications and databases.
- Alphabetical, numerical, and chronological filing systems.
- Basic principles of mathematics.
- Recordkeeping practices and principles.
- Modern office procedures.
- Books, reference materials, journals, and documents, and their appropriateness in serving the needs for recreational reading and research.
- Automated library information and communications systems and equipment usage.
Ability to:
- Effectively assist patrons in response to reference, technology, and library-related questions using print and electronic resources.
- Conduct special programs for a variety of ages.
- Work with various cultural, ethnic, and other demographic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
- Work fairly and courteously with the public; and work effectively with interruptions.
- Assist patrons in the location and use of library materials.
- Learn library practices and procedures.
- Learn computerized cataloging, bibliographical, and circulation system databases and rules for entry of materials.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Work accurately with alphanumeric codes.
- Be comfortable with modern office techniques and computer programs, and type at a speed necessary for successful work performance.
- Prepare displays and other visual materials.
- Maintain records and files.
- Operate audio-visual equipment, photocopy machines, microfilm/microfiche reader printers, and other equipment.
- Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Education:
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college.
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience working in a library or other customer service-centric industry.
Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience can substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis for up to two (2) years.
Physical Requirements:
Work is performed in a typical office environment. (1) Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting and standing for long periods of time; occasional bending or squatting.
