Job Description : SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Camp Supervisor-Salomon Farm, the incumbent presents or facilitates the Farm Camp program; assumes the responsibility for the care, supervision and instruction of groups of youth (ages 4 to 17 years old); greets public and answers questions. The incumbent assists the supervisor with ideas and suggestions for program development and improvement. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Enforces rules of camp and park;
  • Greets parents of campers and answer questions;
  • Leads hikes, outdoor exploration activities, creek walks, and programs;
  • Assists with cleanup and maintenance of learning center and other park buildings;
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions;
  • Assists campers with crafts and other hand art projects;
  • Leads campers in performing farm chores such as feeding and tending livestock, working in vegetable garden;
  • Leads games and activities for campers;
  • Maintains supplies and tools in a clean and orderly fashion;
  • Teaches about farming through experiential education;
  • Develops and executes weekly program schedule;
  • Supervises groups of campers and takes attendance; Supervises campers in teaching kitchen, during assigned farm chores, and bubble machine activities;
  • Develops recipes and activities that can be conducted in the teaching kitchen;
  • Works with assigned counselor-in-training on counselor development;
  • Assesses, records, and notifies supervisor of any accidents or possible hazards; Properly fill out incident reports;
  • Assists with parent night / open hours on Wednesdays;
  • Assists with River Camp, as needed;
  • Creates and follows weekly activity schedule;
  • Complete year end responsibilities which include returning all borrowed items, end of year checklist, staff program and employment evaluation, employment intent form for next season and clean and prepare all camp facilities for closing;
  • Follows and enforce safety rules and report any irregularities and / or abnormal conditions to immediate supervisor.

  • QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED);
  • Childcare experience preferred but not required;
  • Teaching experience preferred but not required;
  • Currently studying education in college or university preferred but not required.
  • OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and / or ABILITIES

  • Willingness to complete Preventing Disease Transmission training;
  • Possess knowledge of or willingness to learn about natural history, Indiana farming history, Salomon history, outdoor recreation, gardening skills;
  • Ability to hike or walk up to 3 - 5 miles per day over uneven terrain or unimproved trails;
  • Competent in communication skills;
  • Ability to understand moderately complex, relatively standardized tasks, processes or operations;
  • Ability to apply routine practices, rules and regulations, procedures or techniques that are relevant to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with supervisors, staff and patrons;
  • Ability to handle unforeseen circumstances involving people, equipment livestock and / or nature.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak publicly effectively and efficiently. Problems during work causing questions about objectives and boundaries are discussed. Incumbent has contact with persons employed by other agencies, and with the public communicating routine information including the giving and receiving of factual information about work.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

    REASONING ABILITY

    Incumbent makes choices and takes action performing a variety of relatively standardized assignments. Errors in decision or work are either readily detected or corrected through supervisory review. Work requires some analysis and judgment but is reviewed by supervisor upon conclusion. Work may involve some spot checking for compliance of procedural requirements.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS - Required for Continued Employment

  • Certified in First Aid, CPR and AED by the American Heart Association within two weeks of employment (provided by the City's Risk Management Department);
  • Valid Indiana Driver's License if City vehicle is used.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

    Incumbent follows standardized practices and procedures or general work instructions. Incumbent's work may have prolonged or frequent exposure to : heavy labor, poor working conditions, and / or extreme outdoor weather conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to hike up to three miles per day over uneven terrain or unimproved trails.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Incumbent is normally standing or walking but on occasion will be required to lift light objects for short periods of time.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Incumbent has sustained exposure to dust, livestock animals, farm machinery, hazardous conditions with exposure to inclement weather and various temperature changes. Incumbent is exposed to recurring work conditions involve chance of injury.
