Job Description : SUMMARY

Working under the direction of the manager of Transportation Engineering, the incumbent will assist with construction inspection for the Transportation Engineering Services department. The incumbent is expected to exercise good judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in conducting day-to-day operations. All work duties and activities must be performed in accordance with the City safety rules and operating regulations, policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the ability to interact with the public, City incumbents, and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism and the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists in daily operations of the City's Transportation Engineering Departments;
  • Assists with moderately complex and relatively standardized inspection, testing, and related work / operations for various construction engineering projects and capital improvement projects;
  • Assists with inspections and field tests using specialized equipment to ensure compliance with project specifications and standards;
  • Assists with ensuring inspection deadlines and standards are met;
  • Assists in maintaining complete, current, and accurate records and files;
  • Assists with maintaining and updating the pavement condition assets and corresponding records through the Pavement Management System Database;
  • Assists with determining final quantities for construction projects;
  • Attends project related meetings (i.e., pre-bid, pre-construction, team meetings);
  • Secures and interprets relevant data required for duties and projects;
  • Assists with project photo documentation;
  • Reproduces, copies, scans, files, and archives assorted drawings, details, and maps, primarily for projects developed by Transportation Engineering project development teams;
  • Assists survey staff in determining exact locations for points, elevations, lines, angles, areas and contours, as requested.

E DU C A T ION and / o r E XP ER IENCE

  • Experience in or specialized knowledge of related inspection, engineering design, drafting, or survey work preferred;
  • Communication skills conducive to maintaining effective working relationships with both public and private sector personnel.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS

    Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Contacts with coworkers, other department personnel, government officials, developers, contractors and the general public occur throughout the work to receive / provide information, assist in maintaining project cohesiveness while handling inquiries and complaints.

    MATHEMATICAL SKI L LS

    Ability to work with difficult mathematical concepts and to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

    REASONING ABI L ITY

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. The incumbent is responsible for managing several interrelated services within the departments and administration which includes coordinating work, managing projects, providing data / reports, and maintaining positive public relations.
