JOB SUMMARY:
This position performs technical duties in the repair and installation of the city’s water and sewer system.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Performs daily inspections of vehicles and equipment.
- Operates dump truck and trailer, Vac-con, snow plow and salt spreader, backhoe, garbage truck, and other equipment as needed.
- Responds to sewer service disruptions; makes sewer service repairs.
- Responds to water service disruptions; makes water service repairs.
- Submits water meter change information and work orders.
- Performs water main shut-downs and repairs.
- Performs repair or replacement of fire hydrants and water valves.
- Performs sewer main repairs.
- Responds to after hours emergencies.
- Performs water and sewer main line taps for new service.
- Performs water and sewer line upgrades.
- Provides as-built and repair drawings.
- Performs contract inspections as needed.
- Performs confined space entries.
- Performs by-pass pumping of sewer as needed. o Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of the installation, repair, and maintenance of a distribution and collector mains, services, force mains, and meters.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in the confined space entry procedures.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
The Utility Repair Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES:
Guidelines include city ordinances, city personnel policies, vehicle operations laws, safety rules, city construction standards and AWWA, NWA, and HRPDC guidelines.. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY:
The work consists of related duties in construction and maintenance of the city’s water and sewer system. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT:
The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of the water and sewer system. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficiency of system operations.
PERSONAL CONTACTS:
Contacts are typically with other city personnel, contractors, vendors, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:
Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
