Transit Safety Specialist
Starting Pay: $54,744.00
Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated Safety Specialist to monitor the safety and security of our transit system. This role involves operational and administrative tasks related to safety compliance at federal, state, and local levels. The ideal candidate will facilitate and support all safety needs within our transit operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensuring compliance with Federal and State safety regulations (DOT, OSHA)
- Managing reporting requirements like the Public Transportation Safety Plan (PTSP)
- Investigating vehicle accidents and incidents with proper documentation
- Administering the Drug and Alcohol Misuse and Testing Program per U.S. DOT guidelines
- Reviewing Workers’ Compensation claims with Human Resources
- Developing and implementing safety and security training for employees
- Conducting safety training for new hires and refresher courses
- Maintaining documentation for safety, security, and training
- Organizing safety meetings and coordinating external training resources
- Performing audits through ride checks and facility inspections for safety compliance
- Preparing and submitting safety and security reports to regulatory agencies
- Investigating customer safety complaints and completing required paperwork
- Serving as the Safety Officer and supporting the Risk and Safety Program Manager
- Leading innovation and sustainability efforts, tracking progress
- Monitoring technology projects and recommending innovative solutions
- High School diploma or equivalent; vocational/technical training preferred
- One (1) year of experience in transit and safety or sustainability preferred
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and capable of using tablets and computers
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class B or C with passenger endorsement required
- Essential personnel status; must pass DOT physical examination
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays
- Must meet physical demands such as climbing bus steps, walking, and lifting up to 25 lbs
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to collaborate effectively
- Sound judgment and ability to adapt to changing environments
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Knowledge of safety guidelines and procedures relevant to the position
