The Department of Parks & Recreation seeks to fill one (1) position in the Maintenance Worker classification (Pay Range 16) in the Forestry Division. This is a permanent, overtime-eligible, bargaining unit position with a starting hourly pay rate of $23.88 (Step A).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Plants trees.
- Cuts down trees.
- Removes limbs.
- Removes tree stumps.
- Grinds tree parts.
- Sprays various herbicides and insecticides as required.
- Operates a variety of automotive and heavy equipment including pick-up trucks, dump trucks, bucket trucks, trash compactor trucks, backhoes, front-end loaders, and snow blower/auger trucks.
- Operates and maintains small tools and equipment, including front-end mowers, chain saws, stump grinders, chippers, jackhammers, string line trimmers, cement saws, and walk-behind snow blowers.
- Assist with preparation and clean-up of Special Events in the parks and downtown areas.
- Perform minor repairs, winterization, and start-up of various parks, including wading pools, restrooms/shower facilities, and water fountains.
- Plows and salt streets
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A High School diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- A working knowledge of Illinois traffic laws and experience in the safe operation of trucks and motor equipment.
- Experience in construction, park maintenance, or related work.
- Experience working with trees.
- A working knowledge of the tools, methods, and materials typically used in tree planting and removal and/or landscaping operations.
- A valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement is required, or acquired within six (6) months of hire. The CDL and endorsement must be maintained as a condition of employment.
- An Illinois Public Pesticide Applicator or Operator license is required within 1 year of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
- To carry out assignments with little supervision.
- To be knowledgeable about tree planting, removal, pruning, and landscaping.
- To understand and follow instructions.
- To perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in various specific areas.
- To perform in a lead supervisor position in a temporary capacity.
- To perform physical labor.
- To communicate effectively through strong verbal and written skills and maintaining a working relationship with co-workers and the general public.
- To be on 24-hour call in case to respond to municipal emergencies.
- To be knowledgeable of the City’s safety procedures and practices.
