ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Paints lines, arrows, and curbs on streets. This work includes laying out new traffic markings, lane lines, stop bars, crosswalks, center-lines, parking stalls, and other related traffic and pedestrian markings. Also is responsible for minor repairs of paint marking equipment.
Notice of Position Vacancy
The City of Galesburg seeks interested applicants to fill one (1) position in the Maintenance Worker classification of the Traffic Division. This is an overtime-eligible, bargaining unit position with a starting hourly pay rate of $22.96 (Step A).
General Description of the Position
This is a semi-skilled general maintenance position involving skill and dexterity. Responsible for safe and efficient operations of various types of tools and equipment. Work is performed under direct supervision.
Essential Functions
- Installs and maintains all traffic signing in accordance with City Code and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control devices.
- Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and installs all electrical City infrastructure including street lighting, traffic signals, and other electrical systems for all City Departments and Divisions including the airport, parks, golf course, campground, recreation, cemetery, and City buildings.
- Plows and salts streets.
- Operates a variety of automotive and heavy equipment such as pick-up trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, paint stripers, and front-end loaders in conjunction with job assignments.
- Repairs, replaces and patches street and sidewalk surfaces.
- Maintains tools and equipment.
- Prepares for special events.
- Performs other duties as required and assigned.
- Is to be on 24-hour call in case of emergency.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or ability to obtain one within six (6) months.
- At least one year’s experience in construction; additional experience and training is desirable.
- Knowledge of electrical, and construction principles, methods, techniques, and procedures.
- Ability to learn to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and install all electrical City infrastructure.
- Knowledge, understanding, and compliance with all city, state, and federal safety rules and regulations as applicable to the construction industry.
- Ability to perform as lead supervisor in a temporary capacity when required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to lift 50-100 pounds on a regular basis and be able to perform heavy to very heavy physical labor. Must be able to climb a ladder, lift, walk, bend, stoop, stand, kneel, reach, and sit. As many of the job duties are outside, the applicant must be able to tolerate manual labor performed in varied and extreme weather conditions.
