ABOUT GALT

Incorporated in 1946, Galt is a growing community with approximately 26,000 residents located approximately 20 miles south of Sacramento along Highway 99. The City is led by five elected council members, the Mayor being appointed.

The City is known for its annual Independence Day Celebration with fireworks and the Winter Bird Festival. We also offer the Galt Market, an open air market held every Tuesday and Wednesday offering great deals on fresh fruits and vegetables, clothing, home furnishings and much more.

Sports and Recreation are key to Galt's quality of life. Enhanced by its mild seasonal climate and numerous parks, Galt features a variety of activities for youth and adults such as t-ball, baseball, football, soccer, swimming and swim lessons, karate, exercise classes and many more choices to meet the needs of the community.

The City of Galt is located in the heart of the Delta Recreation Area in Northern, California. Thirty minutes away are the Sierra Foothills and the Sacramento Delta. Reno, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco and the CA coast are all within a two hour drive making Galt a recreational haven for boat lovers and outdoorsmen alike.


ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Galt is currently accepting applications for:
RECREATION WORKER I - LIFEGUARD (NOT YET CERTIFIED)
Temporary/Seasonal Position
February 2025 through September 2025
Work Schedule Varies -
Approximately 18 - 36 hrs. Per Week

All accepted applicants MUST attend a Skills Check and all Lifeguard Training Classes

Skills Check will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at 6:00 PM at the Gora Aquatic Center
During Skills Check candidates MUST -
  • Successfully swim 50 yards freestyle and/or backstroke, and tread water for 2 minutes, and swim 50 yards freestyle and/or backstroke
  • Successfully complete a 50-second timed event consisting of : swimming 20 yards, submerging to depth of 6 feet to retrieve a 10 pound brick, return to surface to swim/walk to the starting point holding the brick at the surface of the water and exiting the water without using a ladder or steps.

After successful completion of the skills check, candidates will then attend Lifeguard Training Classes that will be held on the following dates:
March 8, 2025 (9:00AM - 5:00PM)
March 15, 2025 (9:00AM - 5:00PM)
March 21, 2025 (9:00AM - 5:00PM)
March 22, 2025 (9:00AM - 5:00PM)
March 29, 2025 (9:00AM - 5:00PM)
All candidates must attend each class in order to successfully pass. Once Lifeguard & CPR certification is received, a copy must be provided to the City.

Successful candidates will receive a conditional offer of employment letter requiring a pre-employment screening process which includes:
  • Fingerprinting for criminal background check
  • Medical evaluation including a lift test of 50 pounds
  • Tuberculosis (TB) screening
  • Work Permit from school will be required before start date (if under 18)

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Under direct supervision, employees in this "at-will" classification perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the areas of recreation or the market divisions of the City.

Example of Duties

  • Maintain constant watch over patrons in assigned areas and assists patrons in distress.
  • Enforce rules and regulations of programs and facilities as mandated by City polices including in and around the pool, deck, locker rooms and turf areas.
  • Performs emergency procedures when needed; administers First Aid as necessary
  • Completes appropriate reports and forms as necessary
  • Help with the Swim Lessons Programs and the Swim Team Program during the summer season (teaching lessons and/or lifeguarding).

Typical Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Must be at least fifteen (15) years old at time of hire. Must obtain a work permit, if under the age 18.


PRE-EMPLOYMENT AND CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:

City of Galt is authorized and required by the state of California to access Local, State, and/or Federal criminal history as part of the testing process. This process can be completed by initial fingerprinting and/or a full background investigation pursuant to Penal Code §11105(b) (10), §11105.3, §13300(b) (10); Education Code §10911.5;Public Resources Code §5164) and in compliance with the City of Galt's Fingerprinting Policy and Procedure.

As a future employee or volunteer, you are required to be fingerprinted and processed through the Department of Justice and cleared before you can start. All information obtained will be kept in strict confidentiality.

Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

Must have a current and valid TB Test pursuant to Public Resources Code 5163.

Must pass a physical.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Depending on assignment, must possess strength, stamina and mobility to work indoors in an office setting/recreational facility or to perform required work out doors including: frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, climbing, and walking on uneven surfaces; lifting up to 40 pounds with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; use of standard office equipment and/or recreation equipment including a computer and handheld devices; constant use of overall vision; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone and/or radio. Must be willing to work out doors in all weather conditions with possible exposure to loud noise, traffic, and potentially hazardous conditions such as exposure to chemicals, fumes and other environmental substances.


ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Employees may work in the field and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background investigation, including fingerprinting. May be required to work a varied schedule of hours, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays at a variety of City facilities. Work may be occasionally performed indoors. Basic cleaning of facilities may include exposure to cleaning agents.


At-Will Employment
A Temporary Employee is an at-will employee assigned to work in a position less than 940 hours per fiscal year. Employees appointed to positions designated at-will means that both the employee and the City have the right to terminate employment at any time, with or without advance notice, and with or without cause. At-will employees have no access to administrative grievance and/or disciplinary appeals procedures described and explained in this Manual. The terms and conditions of employment for full time at-will employees will be outlined in a personal services contract executed upon appointment. Part-time and temporary employees are at-will with the terms of employment outlined in the “At-Will Statement” signed at time of hire. Nothing in the City of Galt Personnel Manual, the “At-Will Statement”, or in an employee’s contract shall limit the right to terminate employment at-will.

Paid Sick Leave
In Accordance with the Health Workploace Health Families Act of 2014, the City of Galt provides paid sick leave for all employees. Effective July 1 2015, temporary employees shall accrue paid sick leave as provided for in AB 1522, ABS. Paid sick leave accrues at the rate of one hour per every thirty (30) hours worked.

Deferred Compensation
Temporary employees are not eligible to receive any City provided employee benefits, except participation in the City's 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and as provided by applicable law. The employee may elect to have any amount of money up to the legal limit withheld from their regular paycheck and placed in a deferred compensation plan in accordance with Section 457 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Social Security Program
Temporary employees participate in an alternate plan called the Public Agency Retirement Services Alternate Retirement System 457 Plan (PARS ARS 457).

State Disability Insurance
The City participates in the California State Disability Insurance (SDI) and is funded through employee payroll deductions.
