JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for conducting and reviewing construction and development plans, building inspections, and administrating and enforcing State fire and life safety codes and local ordinances. Coordinating annual Fire Inspection in accordance with State fire and life safety codes and local ordinances. This position reports to the Fire Chief and works under the direction and supervision of the Fire Marshal.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Conducts inspection of new, existing, and/or under construction buildings and businesses to ensure compliance with applicable fire code and regulations; conduct follow-up inspections as required.
  • Issues court citations for uncorrected violations, testifies in court for issued citations and recommends closing of business or construction sites for violations.
  • Conducts building site plan reviews; receives and analyzes building site plans, architectural drawings, and other documentation; determines minimum compliance with appropriate codes and ordinances; and reviews and analyzes code compliance of fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, hydrant flow calculations, occupancy and load capacities or other items.
  • Conducts Fire Inspection activities; investigates complaints of unsafe construction, unsafe conditions of construction or occupancy and other complaints; identifies code violations; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
  • Establishes relationships with the public and business owners to promote positive public relations for the department.
  • Ensures City and departmental compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
  • Reviews construction, development, and renovation plans and specifications for compliance with State and local fire safety codes.
  • Develops relationships with various organizations and departments.
  • Prepares and submits various required reports for fire inspections, and code violations to the Fire Marshal.
  • Conducts training for personnel assigned to the Fire Department for fire inspections and code violations.
  • Assists in pre-fire planning including equipment and water availability, fire exits, and number of people, and updates territorial maps.
  • Responds to alarms and assist in activities at the scene of major emergencies, as required.
  • Attends training programs and seminars to obtain and/or maintain certifications; and to update knowledge and skills to meet and maintain State, County and City requirements.
  • Stays abreast of professional trends, practices and related legal matters in the public safety and fire inspections field; attends conferences, training seminars, etc. Consults with other jurisdictions regarding facility design and implementation, risk management, programs, and service issues. Advises other jurisdictions upon request.
  • Assists in the development of department standard operating procedures.
  • Performs communication and education outreach to the general public.
  • Assists in the City in various functions during a natural or other emergency incident.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in fire sciences or a related field; and three (3) years of firefighting experience or fire inspection experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Georgia Driver’s license. Must meet the current requirements set forth by the Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Act for Georgia State Firefighter I. Must have National Professional Qualification for Firefighter II. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain CPR and First Responder Certification. Must have or obtain certification as a Georgia Fire Inspector and International Code Council Fire Inspector I. Must have or obtain either National Fire Academy Plans Review or the Georgia Public Safety Training Center Plans Review certification within twenty-four (24) months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • KKnowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Garden City Fire Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Firefighter and Fire Marshal.
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
  • Knowledge of various Fire Inspection and Plan Review software.
  • Knowledge of firefighting techniques, firefighting apparatus and equipment, hydraulics, local, state, and federal fire codes, NFPA guidelines, local geography, streets and buildings, hazardous materials, first responder emergency medical care, building codes, building construction, basic mechanics and procedures and methods as required in the performance of duties.
  • Knowledge in the use of pumper, jaws of life, power tools, ladders, positive pressure blower fan, electrical power generator, pick-head axe, K-12 saw, spanner wrench, medical supplies, mechanics and electrical tools, firefighting equipment, etc.
  • Ability to prepare vehicle maintenance reports, training reports, workstation schedules, rescue reports, fire loss reports, incident reports, tour reports, water usage reports, gas reports and pre-fire plans using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, and other staff members.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
  • Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to plan, organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Is able to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department.
  • Ability to work a regular 8-hour shift and any required overtime.
  • Ability to maintain City standards of conduct, which includes being respectful of others, possessing cultural awareness and sensitivity, being flexible, and demonstrating a dedication to the position as well as to the community.
  • Ability to demonstrate good workmanship, including performing tasks neatly and in a timely manner.
  • Ability to report on time for work and perform the duties of the position as required.
  • Ability to maintain a neat, clean, and acceptable personal appearance.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public.
  • Ability to demonstrate a good work ethic, including a willingness to perform job place tasks and to assist coworkers without unnecessary directive.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $27.95 per hour
