Full Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: This position performs skilled and unskilled labor and uses heavy and light equipment on streets, ditches, and canals. This position is under the administrative supervision of the Public Works Director and the direct supervision of the Public Works Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs skilled labor in the operation of heavy equipment such as but not limited to rubber tire backhoe; large tractor w/side arm; heavy trucks; motor grader; bulldozer; excavator; frontend loader; street sweeper; and street broom.
- Performs manual duties that include cutting, trimming, and/or raking of trees and shrubs; cleaning ditches; clearing grounds and fields, and overgrowth of landscape for proper drainage, etc. as necessary.
- Clears roadways of dirt and debris with heavy equipment or as necessary manually.
- Maintains inventory of all supplies required to perform the duties of the position.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous errands including pick-up and delivery of supplies or equipment.
- Uses light equipment including but not limited to weed eater, mowers, medium tractors, and light trucks as needed.
- Prepares landscape for utilities upgrades and maintenance.
- Removes and repairs asphalt and or concrete areas such as streets/roads, sidewalks, parking areas, etc. as needed.
- Performs work in constructing, painting, repairing, or other duties associates with road maintenance.
- Performs duties in all weather conditions.
- Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions.
- Assists with hazardous waste cleanup and disposal as needed.
- Cross-trains in one or more areas of department functions.
- Participates in and attends all City sponsored training as required.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED); and three (3) years of experience in a public works or similar setting to include the safe and productive operation of heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of safe working procedures in operating relevant equipment.
- Knowledge of the operations of the Public Works Department and maintenance work involved in a comprehensive municipal construction, repair and maintenance program; and considerable knowledge of materials, equipment and supplies used in this work.
- Knowledge of both the department’s Standard Operating Procedures and the City’s Personnel Policies and Procedures.
- Knowledge of on the job safety requirements.
- Skills in the application of sub-professional maintenance repair and construction techniques.
- Skills in the repair and use of pertinent tools and equipment, to include rubber tire backhoe; large tractor w/side arm; heavy trucks – such as boom truck; motor grader; bulldozer; excavator; front-end loader; street sweeper; and street broom and must also be able to operate as required: lawn tractors; mowers; dump trucks; trucks with long bed trailers; jackhammer; etc.
- Skills in reading comprehension- literacy in English with the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and posted schedules.
- Ability to control operations of equipment.
- Ability to listen effectively and to monitor and assess the performance of self and others to make corrections, improvements as necessary.
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment as well as determine maintenance needs.
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to problem solve.
- Ability to take direction and work in a team atmosphere.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and City/County maps.
- Ability to understand, interprets, and effectively carries out complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate job related equipment and lift and carry heavy objects safely and demonstrate safe work procedures and equipment operation.
- Ability to read simple blueprints and plans.
- Ability to keep operating records.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays, and respond to calls during non-work hours.
- Ability to wear personal protective safety equipment and perform job tasks that require the use of such equipment.
- Ability to maintain City standards of conduct, which includes being respectful of others, possessing cultural awareness and sensitivity, being flexible, and demonstrating a dedication to the position as well as to the community.
- Ability to demonstrate good workmanship, including performing tasks neatly and in a timely manner.

Work Environment:
This job is performed in a municipal/industrial type setting, primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions – including extreme heat and extreme cold. The operator is constantly exposed to unpleasant sights and smells and may at times be exposed to toxic substances and must take necessary precautions to protect eyes, nose, and skin from irritation and infection. The work will require driving to another location.
