JOB SUMMARY: This position works as general laborer and light equipment operator. This position is under the administrative supervision of the Public Works Director and the direct supervision of the Public Works Supervisor and may have daily work directed by an assigned Crew Leader.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs manual duties which include cutting, trimming, raking, around trees and shrubs, cleaning ditches, clearing grounds and fields, and overgrowth of landscape for proper drainage etc.
- Clears roadways of dirt and debris.
- Installs and replaces road signs.
- Maintains inventory of all supplies required to perform the duties of the position.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous errands including, pick-up, and delivery of supplies or equipment.
- Uses various light equipment including but not limited to weed eaters, mowers, medium tractors, and backhoe and operates light trucks on a daily basis.
- Prepares landscape for utilities upgrades and maintenance.
- Performs work in constructing, painting, repairing, or other duties associated with roads maintenance.
- Installs drain pipes and storm drains.
- Performs duties in all weather conditions.
- Maintains power tools and equipment, checks oil, cleans air filters, mixes fuel, replaces spark plugs, and changes weed eater heads.
- Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions
- Participates in and attends all City sponsored training as required.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED); and one (1) year of experience in operating light industrial equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Georgia Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of safe working procedures in operating relevant equipment.
- Knowledge of the operations of the Public Works Department and maintenance work involved in a comprehensive municipal construction, repair and maintenance program; and considerable knowledge of materials, equipment and supplies used in this work.
- Knowledge of both the department’s Standard Operating Procedures and the City’s Personnel Policies and Procedures.
- Knowledge of on the job safety requirements.
- Skills in the application of sub-professional maintenance repair and construction techniques.
- Skills in the repair and use of pertinent tools and equipment, to include: lawn tractors; mowers; dump trucks; trucks with long bed trailers; light truck; jackhammer; chemical sprayer; concrete cut-off saw; walk-behind concrete saw; backpack blower; auger; weed eater; etc.
- Skills in reading comprehension- literacy in English with the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and posted schedules.
- Ability to control operations of equipment.
- Ability to listen effectively and to monitor and assess the performance of self and others to make corrections, improvements as necessary.
- Ability to perform routine maintenance on equipment as well as determine maintenance needs.
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to problem solve.
- Ability to take direction and work in a team atmosphere.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and City/County maps.
- Ability to understand, interprets, and effectively carries out complex oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate job related equipment and lift and carry heavy objects safely and demonstrate safe work procedures and equipment operation.
- Ability to keep operating records.
- Ability to wear personal protective safety equipment and perform job tasks that require the use of such equipment.
- Ability to maintain City standards of conduct, which includes being respectful of others, possessing cultural awareness and sensitivity, being flexible, and demonstrating a dedication to the position as well as to the community.
- Ability to demonstrate good workmanship, including performing tasks neatly and in a timely manner.

Work Environment:
This job is performed in a municipal/industrial type setting and will require driving to another location; will work primarily outdoors in all weather conditions. Will be exposed to hot temperatures, cold temperatures, sudden changes in temperatures, loud noise, foul odors, slippery surfaces, rain, rarely sleet, wind, noxious fumes, mud, dirt, and may be exposed to chemicals. Persons in this job may also encounter snakes, rats, and other wildlife.
