JOB SUMMARY: This position reports directly to the Wastewater Supervisor and follows on-the-job training from the Class III Wastewater Operator and a professional educational program in wastewater treatment plant operation to become a certified plant operator; This position performs a variety of duties that include the wastewater treatment plant, including but not limited to: maintaining the plant, performing basic maintenance on equipment, collecting and testing samples, calling in flow values, transporting samples, and operating lift stations and water wells.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Maintains the wastewater treatment plant including but not limited to cutting and trimming grass.
- Assists with the installation, maintenance and repair of the physical plant and pump stations and of their components.
- Assists in the performance of regular and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on all plant equipment and machinery.
- Collects samples for testing.
- Calls in flow values.
- Operates lift stations.
- Operates water wells.
- Conducts chlorine, pH and Dissolved Oxygen tests.
- Collects readings from meters.
- Completes daily paperwork related to the various position responsibilities.
- Operates and shuts down the belt filter press.
- Operates City vehicles.
- On call to respond to emergencies and breakdowns at the plant and pump stations.
- Conducts the necessary weekend checks of the treatment plant on a rotating basis.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED); and six (6) months of related work experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to obtain Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Class III certification within two years from date of employment. A valid Georgia driver’s license is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to gain knowledge of the proper methods and techniques used in cleaning, repairing, and maintaining water systems equipment.
- Ability to gain knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Ability to gain knowledge of operating wastewater systems machinery in a safe and capable manner.
- Skill in using hand and power tools.
- Ability to gain knowledge of proper use of hazardous chemicals.
- Ability to obtain and maintain required certification as a water plant operator.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to follow safety practices and recognize hazards.
- Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
- Ability to use computers for data entry.
